OPI Skull & Glossbones

For the longest time I have thought this polish was called Skull & CROSSbones - rather than GLOSSbones.

It was only when someone corrected me yesterday on Twitter that I realised my mistake.

"Oh yeah - so it is" I thought when I looked at the bottom of the bottle.

What a divvy!

Anyway, name confusion aside, I declare this my new favourite polish.

(Excuse crappy nail job and the fact that the photo does not do this polish justice)

I hauled this a while ago from the same trusty eBay shop - Link! - I always use and it's taken me sometime to give it a go. Every time I looked at it I just didn't feel excitement and I was a bit worried that it was going to come out like Essie's Great Expectations - which is very similar and a bit of a miserable light grey shade on my skin.

I was very very wrong!

This is AMAZING! Yes - that's right I am going to over-exaggerate my love for this to the max so prepare yourself for lots and lots of adjectives.

It's a simple, creamy milky grey but it's just so......modern. That's the best way to describe it. I love light pinks on nails - but that's not original. I also like darker greys, but they can often be foreboding.

Skull & Glossbones is the more modern alternative - neutral enough to wear anywhere but interesting enough to catch someone's eye.

This shall be my friend for the next few weeks I think.

Whilst we are talking about polish...

This is a bit of tangent but I wondered if there was anyone else out there in the same boat....So I removed my toe nail polish yesterday and I suddenly realised that my poor toenails have probably been covered in polish - with no more than a week off - for.....well, to be honest, bloomin' years!

That realisation made me a little sick - and whilst natural toenails also cause me to produce a little vomit, I am going to let them breathe for a while. After all this time, they definitely deserve it!

God, even thinking about toenails is making me cringe...but anyone else out there treated them in the same way?

I am off to drink some Chilean red wine peeps - have a great Saturday!

  1. Beautiful polish-love it:) I've had polish on my toes forever too. I just can't go with the natural look.

  2. @Crystal - same as me then :) I should really make this decision in winter when I can hide my feet in socks haha :)

  3. I cannot stand natural toe nails but reading this has made me feel guilty & I may have to do the same as you, I never take my poor toe nails into consideration!

  4. Ha, I know about the issue with the toes. The mind is willing to go bare, but once I remove the polish, take one look and immediately paint again. This might be more something for the winter, even though Vy's nails do a good pedicure, the staining just can't be ignored.
Unfortunately above polish does not go with my skin colour. Would give me corpse hands. But as you're tanner than I am, it looks really good!

  5. I will sometimes give my toes a break from polish. Not very often though! haha I just give myself a quick pedicure and buff my toenails to get rid of any polish stains. And I wear ballet flats a lot during that week! :)

  6. OMG I thought exactly the same thing, I think I need to get my eyes checked, again lol.

  7. I MUST have this polish! Seen it on a few blogs now and it just looks perfect, thanks for sharing the link!

I know what you mean about toenails, the only time I see mine is for the few minutes whilst removing the old polish to reapply a new one! I daren't let them breathe for too long incase I end up 'needing' to wear sandals!... :-/ hehe!

  8. Now you mention it I'm quite disgusted at how long nail polish has been covering my toenails! :(

  9. I love that colour, i think il have to run down to the store on monday and pick it up :-) i was debating it. but we all know it was a purchase sooner or later.
and im completely on the same band wagon as you are with the toe nail polish deal. for as long as i can remember my mum has always had her toe nails coloured, so i did the same when i was younger.. then grew up and it turned to a habit, and now i just cringe when i dont have a colour on them. within the last two weeks i realized in what horrible condition they must be in and decided to remove all polish, slather some opi nail envy on it, and now im giving them a break :-)

  10. My poor toenails too have not seen the light of day in a long time. I don't mind natural toenails, but it's so much prettier with the pedi. But knowing that they do need a rest from my painting obsession, so sometimes I force myself to go *gulp* without it for sometime. It's hard at first, but it's necessary sometimes.

  11. This is one of my favorite polishes from opi! I've never really thought about how long my toenails have been painted . . . years! I should probably give them a break, eh?

  12. Thank you for the link to ebay - can be useful :)

  13. Skull and Glossbones looks lovely on you! My toenails haven't seen the light of day for quite some time! Anything about feet makes me cringe. Ew!

  14. I love this nail varnish! It's such a nice sophisticated colour! I'm exactly the same with nail varnish on my toes, the bare minimum I can do is clear nail varnish!

  15. I always hate the natural toenail look when people wear sandals. cringe! maybe just put a nice base coat on so they do have a bit of a shine to them and can breathe as well. I usually let them breathe during the winter lol. summer time i must wear sandals, its too hot in Texas to wear anything else!

  16. Hi Laura!

My poor little toes haven't seen daylight for a few months as well!
I always let them "breathe" during winter when I don't wear open shoes!
For now they have to suffer, I can't bear to see them naked! I have too many nice colours that need to be loved!
I often do "Nails of the Day" posts here: http://mesbistouilles.blogspot.com

    Have a nice evening... ;-)

  18. Funnily enough I removed my toenail polish this morning and didn't reapply. I wanted to give them a breather.

I am usually so lazy I just paint over the previous colour. Gross!

  19. That such a pretty colour, is it from a collection? I also can not have my toe nails painted, I've always gone for the trusty red but have slightly stained my nails in the process oppssy. Love your blog, I like the mix of some beauty related and lots of fashion, you have lovely clothes :)

  20. ohh! u r talking about my super attractive winter toes! hahaha that is what i do all winter, and try not to look at them, works for me :) btw i wanted to order the white focco but it is out of stock :(

  21. What a great colour. I tend to go to dark colours rather than lights, but might have to give this a go.

  22. I really want to try a colour like this, it looks gorgeous :)

The part about giving your toenails a break made me laugh because I had exactly the same experience a few days ago - I realised that they needed a break so I removed the polish, buffed the nails and then left them..
But got so sick of the natural look that I ended up painting them again a couple of days later!
    I'm terrible x

  24. I don't think my toenails have been bare for more than 24 hours since I was a teen -- and I'm 28 now! I hate looking at bare toes! haha :)

  25. It looks very wearable laura! :)

Laura, do you happen to know remedies for chipping nails? 'coz i've got this problem thus I am not to hesitant to put varnish on my nails... :(

  27. i'll paint my toenails and then leave them alone for a while until they don't look so great. i honestly just get way too lazy to do something about chipped toenail polish. it becomes a bit of a problem when i decide to wear sandals.

  29. After this Post I really have to try this polish out. It sits right in front of me since like forever, but this afternoon it will be painted.

  30. i think you definitely have to be the proud owner of relatively tanned skin/the right skin tone to rock this polish. i hauled it myself about two weeks ago, painted it on with excitement ... only to realise that with my winter paleness (i live in australia) it really made my hands like akin to those of a person who has been dead two months. i think i may have to give it a go again once i'm tanned up in summer.

i will say this for it though, it looks fantastic under the OPI silver shatter polish. so chic and understated without looking a bit trashy like the black shatter sometimes looks on me.

so glad to see you blogging again, and about your clothing more too! your style was always something i really admired while reading your old blog

  31. Love that polish! It looks like the perfect nude, and it actually looks bone-coloured (in a non-creepy way). And I completely agree about giving your toenails a break, my current nail polish has stained my toenails yellow so I'll be hiding mine away under next summer.

  32. This polish is lovely I have been craving most of this collection for a while but times are hard haha! and you are a much stronger person than me I can't have varnishless nails x

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love this colour and completely agree with your description, a modern neutral for sure! Eww, a natural toenail is a gag worthy sight and I have not let mine breathe for years until last week when I decided my poor suffocated tootsies should get a week off! However I was at work all week and they were covered by black tights!

  36. Love this nail polish! always been tempted by grey but never tried it after this post think I shall! Totally agree my toes are always painted and im a sucker for minx! Crazy though we are so concerned with our fingernails damaged by false nails or constant nail varnish but our tootsies are forgotten about and half the time not on show! x

    ReplyDelete
  37. I haven't had unpolished toes in years as well and I can't see myself giving them a breather anytime soon to be quite honest.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Seriously can't stand my toenails without polish! The worst thing is that I always paint them in the same polish haha I think i'll opt for a different colour next time I paint them!
Love the colour of Skull and Glossbones (OPI polishes have the best names!) :) xx

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha my toes are in exactly the same situation as yours :) But naked toe nails... yuk! How come we've all grown used to polished nails? I try to let mine have a few days off nailpolish when I'm absolutely sure I'm going to wear closed shoes only!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I kinda feel the same way about naked nails-fingernails & toenails. Natural just doesn't do it for me. Feet are ugly anyways...polish is about the only thing that pretty's them up :)

  41. if you have a sally's near you find their nail bleaching kits. (sounds worse than it is, and it's inexpensive)
i lifts all the discolouring etc from your nails, and makes the whites look super white, i didn't it a couple of times and noticed the difference in my nails, just so i could wear sandals without needing my toes polished!

  43. that is a lovely color, been looking for a nice grayish tone color :) thanks for the post hon, I have nail polish on my toes all the time, and last winter I was getting a pedi and the lady told me I should let my nail breath for a while which of course I said yess I will do it; and still did not do that :) I don't know for summer is absolutely not but even in winter times I like me some colorful toes :) have a great day Laura xoxo
