Today I wore a hat!

This is a momentous occasion - yes, it really is!

You see I love hats. I admire people that wear hats but when I wear one? I feel like a....well, a total and utter tit.

But today I overcame self-consciousness and donned a straw trilby from Forever 21that I got last year - and I loved it.

Not only did it shield my hair and face from the sun but it also disguised the frizz! Every day in Dubai is a bad hair day people!

Here I am emerging from the sea :) It feels like a warm bath - I am swimming in it every day (not fully clothed though - obviously)

Dress: Forever 21 (got this yesterday and sort of love the faux tie-dye effect - and it's one-shoulder....and it cost about £10. Smiles all round :) )
Belt: Hollister (expect to see this a lot as I only bought one other belt with me)

Today I also got a much needed manicure at N Bar with Essie Ballet Slippers and Essie Sugar Daddy lightly layered. It's insipid, it doesn't beat Bourgois' Rose Lounge but I like it all the same. I mainly pay for the cuticle work - I can never do it the way a manicurist can.

Hope you are all well! :)  Loving all the comments by the way - and also loving blogging :)

So where do you stand on hats? :)

  7. I feel the exact same way. Love hats on others but feel silly with them on. You look gorgeous. I love the beach.

  8. That hat looks lovely on you!! I can only really wear hats on vacation - its one of those things I cant wear in everyday life either :) Im loving your dubai pics btw, on a random note: what is the best beach to visit- as someones first trip?

  9. Oh, you look gorgeous with that hat, Laura! I'm not sure also if I'd be brave enough to wear one, but I kind of admire people who do! You look so happy and radiant:)

  11. LOVE the hat! Suits you! I'm the same when it comes to hats, looks good on other people, on me? I look like a dork! Haha :)

I'm getting into natural nails too, I blame Bourjois's Rose Lounge!

1 week to go till I'm in Dubai. YES! xo

  12. I have been told by pretty much everyone I have met that I suit hats. I can put on any hat and look good in it. I just really don't like them and find it annoying to wear them. I would be happy to trade this skill. I think you look good in that hat though. But I know it's about you feeling comfortable not other people's judgements.

  13. apparently according to my mother i dont suit hats, but i listen to her advice on just about everything else....this diti i chose to ignore :) Hats abroad are great :) Love yours. Been to F21 in Dubai in jan this year and has brought back some fab memories, thank you x ps Glad to have you back in blog world at least. x

  14. I love the look of hats, but sadly people don't seem to wear it where I live. I'll stick out too much if I wear hats - though I have quite a few dying to be worn!

I am planning to visit Dubai in the near future. Is there some sort of dress code you have to abide by when walking around?

  15. @ansa - i love the beach too but only after about 4pm :) its soooo hot!

@ladyb - definitely vacation only for me :)

@eve - try it when you are next on holiday! its so much easier haha :)

@jeng - thank you! definitely worth the manicure :) haha

@halima - ooh where are you staying?! i am here until the 14th so maybe see you :)

@mnmbrown - exactly. i feel like an idiot wannabe so i am reserving this for holiday time as oppose to real life :)

@hally - haha ignore mother! :) got some great things yesterday at F21 - sometimes it just hits the spot

@Katherine - all the more reason to wear them :) there are so many good beaches but the best and cleanest are attached to hotels....Royal Mirage's is v. nice. and who doesnt like beach side attendants giving them iced fruit and water all day long ? :)

  24. love the entire outfit,cute!

  25. I don't mind wearing them now that my hair is past my jaw. A random driver shouted "Alright gayboy" at me when I had a trilby on with my crop and that put me off them for awhile, for fear that I did actually look like a boy.

I do love berets in winter though and can't wait until I can just throw one on and not worry about what my hair's doing.

Very jealous of your nails here, I've let mine go to the dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @mw - thanks :)

@lorraine - wow that is so bloody rude!!! and my nails are normally shisse - i need professional intervention every once and a while ;)

  27. I feel the same way about hats. I always end up trying my straw hat on with my outfits but taking it off before I leave the house! So happy you wore yours! :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I feel the same way about manicures...the cuticle work they do is miraculous and i can never replicate it at home.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Your nails look lovely!

As for hats, I love them but I've got an odd-shaped head :-( I still covet a classic black felt cloche though!

  30. so happy you're blogging again. just bought a hat myself, waiting for the holidays to wear it though, totally get your point about wearing hats.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do wear more hats in winter I guess and maybe at weddings but it's the same here..I don't feel myself.
On a quick note I guess I would LOVE to rock one of those 1970's big hats that kind of float on the head. So damn sexy.
    I'm so happy you're back. X

  32. The hat looks great! It makes the one shouldered dress look a lot more casual and cute. I like, I like. I'm also with you on hats, I think they are so cool and can really add to an outfit but I feel like I can never pull them off. My boyfriend and others say I look good, so maybe I need to follow your footsteps and just bust one out!

i am also quite in love with your nails, they look gorgeous!

  37. i feel the same about hats, i feel awkward wearing them but love them on everyone else :) a bit like red lips hehe x

  38. I've just bought a straw trilby from Warehouse, I love it and have worn it in the garden but as for wearing in public, not happening... YET! I may just go for it, I'm going on holiday on Sunday, no one knows me in the south of France, perhaps I'll take it with me!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Definitely feel the same with hats, i own them but feel stupid in them haha!
    xx

  40. I work in Accessorize which is filled with gorgeous sun hats in summer and cute woolen hats in winter and every time I see someone try one on it makes me want it but when I try it, it just doesn't work! I'm convince its a hair issue and one day I'll figure out the hair and then be able to wear hats :) Love the F21 dress! x

    ReplyDelete
  41. I finally got Bourjoise Rose Lounge and you are right, it's perfect - although it wasn't easy to get hold of it here in Germany! :D

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wish Forever 21 wasn't so far away from me! This dress is gorgeous as is the hat :)

As far as hats are concerned, I too love them. My fave has to be the fedora. Usually in neutral colors.

Sounds like you're having a great time!

  43. Glad I found your new blog - missed you terribly. You rock off-shoulder tops. The hat gives you an edgy look. I have a funny shaped head at the top and volume-y hair so hats help cover it up and balances my petite frame.

  44. Ahhh Laura it is sooooo good to have you back!! You look fabulous in a hat and that dress is gorgeous. I love nude nails they are so classic, you really can't go wrong x

  48. I love hats too. I wore my straw one today sitting in the garden, which is sadly very far removed from a beach in Dubai. :/ haha

  49. What beautiful beach pictures (looks like sunset), is it humid in Dubai? I love hats, but I don't bother too much with them, because they get in the way of driving. Grrr....to driving. Pretty manicure, very ladylike.

  50. wow, amazing pics Laura, looks gorgeous and liking the hat! :) xx

  51. I feel the same way about wearing hats out in public too! I bought a grey felted fedora at urban outfitters once and wore it out of the store immediately; I just let my friend be embarrassed for me ahaha tmi. Anyways, I'm glad you're back and blogging again! I really appreciate reading your blog!

  52. gosh i'm the same :( like hats on other people but cannot for the life of me pull them off. i think i have a pretty small head and the hat just kind of sucks it in even more...

  60. Oh how I miss Dubai right now! I grew up there and I remember the crazy humid and, literally, HOT weather it has during summer. Crazy!!! I should also give myself confidence in wearing hats. I dunno why i feel weird whenever I wear one. Loves&kisses to Dubai!

  61. I am exactly the same with hats, BUT I also live in fear of developing 'hat hair' as well as looking like a prat... A hat shaped indent in my hair is a rather frightening thing. But on better news, my Guess wedges arrived from Shoe Studio, and it's love! Thank you SO much for sharing that awesome find :) So glad you're back blogging, and so glad you're enjoying it! xx

  62. I am a little bit of a hat addict! I love this one you're wearing. I'm yet to buy anything from F21 though... the downside to living up North!

    ReplyDelete
  63. You look gorgeous!! I have a secret love of hat but i am very self conscious in wearing in public incase look stuuupid! I have been search for one for months which I feel confident in but finding it hard...if you spot me in mall trying on hats come help me! Hehe.. This weather is turning my hair into a total frizz!! xx

  64. Have to say it really suits you, I only wear hats on holiday to block out the sun, would never wear one in the uk! x

  66. You look absolutely stunning, and the photos as a whole with you and the beach are beautiful. I noticed that you use a Canon, I was wondering what lens/settings you use it on, or is it just auto and the kit lens? You probably get asked this all the time... PS You pull that hat off REALLY well. =)

  67. love the classy nails. i know i mainly get my nails done just for the nice cleanup of the cuticles. but on the subject of hats...it depends on what type they are. i personally love the fedora lately. the one you have is great! especially to hide bad hair days :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have a very similar hat that i just purchased at forever 21 last week with every intention of wearing it on the 4th of July. And then I chickened out. I think hats intimidate me. but it looks great on you. Are you loving your new "Wang" bag? I was thinking of ordering one like it from ebay but would love to hear your thoughts.
