A tragedy occurred last week. Yes, I broke a nail.
Whilst Gelish definitely strengthens it doesn't make your talons invincible and as if to prove that point my right thumb nail basically halved in size.
The only thing to do in such difficult circumstances is to make an appointment, get them filed down and re-Gelished.
...and here they are.

Apart from the fact that the manicurist got over-zealous with cuticle removal and caused bleeding on one nail - I am happy because:
a) I quite like the colour - Elegant Wish - a rich raspberry stuffed with red glitter that feels appropriate for December; and
b) I think short nails are chic nails. This is what I tell myself.
I have to admit, part of me does miss applying and playing with regular nail polish. Case in point - I was visually seduced by the stand at Illamasqua and felt a real craving to buy. But as much as I love polish hoarding I am not sure I will be able to deviate from Gelish any time soon. The way it lasts and looks is far better than any of my dog's dinner attempts at self-applied manicures.
Long live Gelish, that's what I say!
What are you wearing on your nails RIGHT NOW? :)

I've been down in the dumps about my nails, can't seem to grow them without breaking a nail or two! They're actually about the same length as yours are right now. Think I might go got that manicure! Nice colour, very Christmassy :) x
ReplyDeleteI'd love the try Gelish, the colour is gorgeous on you! My favourite nail polish at the moment is Orly Rage xx
ReplyDeleteOoh! I really envy your well made nails, it's really well made! :) It's something that I wish I've a talent on-- applying nail lacquers like a pro. :D I like the color that you got. Classic and great for the holiday season!
ReplyDeleteWearing bare nails. :|
Hihi.
xoxo,
LoveSkinBest
what a pretty manicure and nails..Perfect for the season. Advance Merry Christmas Laura <3 xx
ReplyDelete@Parveen - Gelish will be the answer for you then! :) Let me know if you get it!
ReplyDelete@Phoebe - had to look up that colour after reading your comment and wow - looks amazing! so pretty!
@Myrted - bare nails can be nice too. i love the look of a clean, groomed bare nail :) and it has to be red for the holidays, right? :)
I am wearing a black/blue from Shellac. The one you have looks like Shellac Masquerade i had done previously and i think it is the most flattering colour. I could NEVER go to a traditional manicure ever again. xoxo
ReplyDelete@luckymirai - thank you :)
ReplyDelete@EllysMakeupbag - a girl after my own heart :) it's addictive!
Nails Inc - Piccadilly Circus. Such a beautiful red!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful colour!

I pile glitter on my nails when they are short but yours look grown up and chic like you said. I have this dark green holographic color by Glitter Gal called Lizard Belly on my nails and I might never take it off. Its so pretty!
ReplyDeleteLaura is that an engagement ring we spy?? Gorgeous nails BTW x
ReplyDeleteI've come to love short, dark nails lately - so yours look really stylish to me. I'm wearing midtown magic by china glaze (dark espresso with bronze shimmer - a beauty).
ReplyDeleteChanel Particuliere on my fingers and Black Satin on my toes. Love short nails, only length for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing "I'm with Brad" from Sephora by OPI. It's a gorgeous red/black colour and I love it! The colour you picked looks really good, maybe I can find a normal nail polish in that colour ...
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful! I actually think short nails look more chic and polished. I love the look of this Gelish manicure, but I don't think I can part with my extensive collection of nailpolishes any time soon. ARGH!

Bobbing for Baubles from Essie's winter collection- So much love! :)
ReplyDeleteLovely nails! I think short nails is the way to go, I think it looks more modern! Some colors looks overdone with long nails. Right now I am sadly wearing nothing. This is the downside of beeing a nurse, I keep buying lovely nailpolishes but hardly ever get to wear them!
ReplyDeleteTopshop Without a Clue. Perfect apricot cream x
ReplyDeleteOPI 20 candles on my cake
ReplyDelete(although 20 candles was ages ago :))
I LOVE LOVE LOVE acrylic nails and have used them for years. Recently I've tried to fall back in love with my natural nails and I'm getting there slowly. I love short nails even if they're not real but I do not think I could live without being able to change my polish on a whim. I am currently sporting Red Velvet by China Glaze and it is the perfect red for the holidays. It does apply thinner then other reds I've tried but the pay off is the same. Very sleek, shiny, and resists the chip for about 2 weeks!
ReplyDeleteI am LOVING that color on your nails! Very festive!
I need to do a manicure tonight after finishing cleaning my apartment. Three of them split in the last two weeks so I will wear them short and then apply a darker color. Maybe Baby it's "coal" outside or Vodka & Caviar or We'll always have paris or Color so hot if Berns. I haven't decided yet.
ReplyDeleteShort nails are chic! Much more chic than trashy, long, french tipped nails.
ReplyDeleteLovely shade you've picked, I'm favoring OPI Lincoln Park one at the moment. In winter it's always red, very dark maroon or grey for me!!

I'm wearing Ruby pumps by china glaze!! I'm in a glittery nails mood, haha
ReplyDeleteRight now I am wearing Chinoise by Rescue Beauty Lounge. It's the perfect shade of red; not too orange, pink, or blue. Feels very Christmas-y too :)
ReplyDeletei love a red or a darker colour on my nails. coincidentially i just filed mine down on friday as well and still haven't painted them but was thinking of going for Vodka & Caviar this time, i think you would approve :)
ReplyDeleteDeborah Lippmann's Bad Romance!
ReplyDeleteI really must try Gelish but I've found it so hard to find somewhere that offers it.
ReplyDeleteI currently have OPI 'Russian Navy' on :) x
I really do think gel polishes look chic on short nails (that or I tell myself that too!). I'm currently wearing Shellac Masquerade x
ReplyDeleteHi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI never tried Shellac or Gelish...which one do you prefer?? I know Gelish has a more wider range of colours and that it claims to last 3 weeks where as Shellac only lasts 14 days...I want to try either one of them but I'm still debating which one!! haha
Thanks,
Janet

Short nails are definitely chic nails. I'm wearing nothing on my nails, but they're getting painted tonight when I have a bit of time to myself - I'm going for Hyper by Gareth Pugh for MAC.
ReplyDeletebeautifulsmudges.blogspot.com
I love gel polishes too (I use Calgel tought, don't now if Gelish is available in Canada) and I also have an obsession with buying nail polishes!! I have so much I try to resist getting my nails done so I can use them...
ReplyDeleteI'm currently wearing ''Taupe '' by Forever21 Love & Beauty and I'm about to put on Sally Hansen Hard as Nails in ''Grey Area'' xxx
I've been wanting to try gel nails. I think they are a fabulous invention. Currently I have snowflake nail art on my nails. I did a post on them if you would like to see.
ReplyDeleteallthingssgirly.blogspot.com
That's a really pretty colour!
ReplyDeleteI have nothing on my nails at the moment and you've reminded me I must paint them tonight.
Currently wearing Barry M's red glitter with O.P.I's bring on the bling on my ring finger, so so festive!
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous colour! Im currently wearing Nails Inc - Picadilly Circus x
ReplyDeleteI really want to try gel nails. I'm tempted just to file my nails down to the length that yours are, as it's always the nails on one hand that break on me and it's getting annoying having one hand of perfectly groomed nails and one hand of horrible broken ones haha.

ReplyDeleteLove your tips, tricks and shares, Laura! Have been following you since back in the day when you were "vlogging" :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow on Twitter!
Going to try Gels in January after 30 years of acrylic!!! Have kept my nails short for years now and love it as I do much typing these days. Nervous to switch up, but one of my friends is the manicurist, so it should be fine.
Cheers!
~L
just paint over them Laura & then use a none acetone remover!! problem solved!!
ReplyDeleteI love gelish/shelac nail colors SO much. You really cannot beat the shine and longevity of them.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I've been wearing Designer De Better from the OPI Muppet collection. It's the most beautiful champagne with copper flecks in it. It's gorgeous!
xoxoKelsey.

Lovely nails, I think those dark colors always look better on shorter nails.
ReplyDeleteIf you were to be tempted by a little polish play, you can actually apply on top of the Gelish and remove with an acetone-free remover :)
Laura your nails and the color look so nice. But I read that gelish manicure was dangerous. The article compared the gelish manicure to a mini tanning bed for the nails! Read the below article:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.lemondrop.com/2010/07/21/the-truth-about-gel-manicures-plus-shellac-a-new-safer-op/
I love the colour, very festive! I've put a bit of my favourite festive polish, Barry M 150 (sparkly red) over my nude nails and I'm loving it. I do think short, square nails are chic and feel so much cleaner and easier than long nails
ReplyDeletewishfulsinfulyou.blogspot.com
I love a good deep berry colour. I'm channelling my inner tack and can't keep away from glitter polishes lately, especially Model's Own Pink Fizz, so garish but somehow so good!

ReplyDeleteMy nails are very Christmassy too! I have probably overdone it with the glitter but I have OPI's Pros and Bronze on my fingers and Love is a Racquet on my toes.
ReplyDeleteLOVE gellish nails! got them done for the first time for my birthday a couple weeks ago and love'em! mine are a red with tons of shimmer...thought it very appropriate for christmastime :)
ReplyDeleteLovely nails Laura! I much prefer them short like yours. And the colour is a-mazing!
ReplyDeleteI have Gelish on too! I believe mine is called Need a Tan, just a super basic nude but I LOOOOVE it. I'm going back to have it taken off and another put on very soon. I just need to decide on a new color!
ReplyDeletei have been considering gelish after i read your first post on it, but don't have the heart to leave my ever growing nail polish army unattended :)
ReplyDeletethe color is absolutely stunning! lately i've been trying to let my nails breath, so i don't currently have anything on my nails!

I love this colour its so classy, right now I a wearing coralicious by Rimmel :) xx
ReplyDeleteI love short nails too, if I grow my nails I just think it makes my hands look long and spindly.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently wearing Revlon's Cherries in the Snow for the first time and although I love the colour, it's been ages since I've worn a drug store polish so was aghast when it chipped within the day!
love the nails, beaut of a colour
ReplyDeleteSTYLE DECORUM
I agree - short nails are chic! Especially adorned in dark colors!
ReplyDeleteI'm seeing this new trend (actually a throwback to the 60's) of very long nails filed to a sharp point: Kesha, Adele, Ed Hardy Villain ad ...
I'm about to paint on Revlon "Glitz & Glam" :)
You've got me wanting to try the gel though.
looks gorgeous! lovely colour:)xo
ReplyDeleteeeevc.blogspot.com
Looks lovely Laura! I agree with the short nails. I think they look very chic and I always keep mine short (otherwise it makes work difficult). Right now I've gone simple and am wearing Essie's Vanity Fairest - a lovely nude pink with the prettiest hint of sparkle. =)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! If ya wanna go back to playing with colors I recommend trying this little trick I found on Pinterest. It's using the Nutra Nails gel manicure set. You use the 5 minute gel polish from the kit and use your own base, polish and topcoat. I used linkin park after dark and I'm going on day 5 with NO chips! I'm shocked, I've never had a polish job last this long! I'm rough on my nails and they normal Lou chip within hours! Here's the link giving you the steps/process... http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com/2011/10/i-broke-rules.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FGqCLV+%28It%27s+The+Small+Things%29&m=1. Hope it works for you too! -- Jami :)
