Another ode to perfume rests below...I know it's just smelly water but my God, I love it!
_______________________________________________________________________________
This is a true guilty pleasure perfume - one of those uber-commercial fragrances that you know you shouldn't really like, but you just do.
It's bottle, with more than a design nod to Vera Wang's Princess, shrieks "teen market". The marketing blurb - about how it possesses molecules that stimulate hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for attraction and lust - is stuff to make the eyes roll. And the fragrance itself initially opens just like another Angel-esque clone - sweet, spicy and warm.
But despite all of this, I enjoyed it from the first sniff back in August and put it on my Christmas wishlist. And there is a very specific reason why.
Liquorice. (UK spelling by the way although licorice is far easier to type :)
Yes the Bertie Bassett liquorice note that rests between the woody amber/vanilla base and the bright, sharp mandarin and star anise top notes makes it stand out from the rest of those generic sweet scents.
So here's the perfume journey...
When you first spray it, I will admit, it smells like a load of chemicals. Delightful.
But then within seconds the liquorice emerges. It's strong and almost bitter and when mixed with the vanilla creates a dense, creaminess that mitigates the overt sweetness of the star anise. It's hard to describe - I'm trying and failing here - but after an hour or two your skin smells like a warm and robust cocoa. And after four hours it's pretty much gone.
Oddly it smells better on my neck that it does on my wrists...in fact right now I am trying to contort my head to smell it so that I can better describe it for you.
Now I don't think it's ground-breaking - and the use of liquorice isn't particularly new: comparisons online refer to Lolita Lempicka, Black XS and Escada Magnetism - but there is something quite interesting and most of all, fun about Loverdose.
Of course it's not going to win any awards for sophistication any time soon - the heart shaped pink glassed bottle saw to that - but it's the kind of perfume that will keep you warm and comforted on a winter's night.
Loverdose has also absolutely confirmed that I need to take the plunge and get Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille. This fragrance has haunted me for about 18 months and yet I still haven't bought it. Why is that? A vanilla scent with liquorice, sandalwood and coconut? I should be ashamed! :)
So, what are you smelling of today? Did you get any perfumes for Christmas?

Oooh, I've been wanting to try Loverdose so badly, but it's not in any of the shops around me. I love the bottle, but I'm afraid to blind buy it because of that liquorice note. I absolutely HATED it in Lolita Lempicka, it was gross! I want to like Loverdose so badly!
ReplyDeleteI got Dita von Teese's perfume this Christmas, I quite like it actually. :) Jasmine-y goodnes, yum. <3 And today I'm wearing Fancy by Jessica Simpson. *shame* It does smell amazing though.
What are your thoughts on Comme Des Garcons 2? I have only smelt it on men but am tempted to order for myself!
ReplyDeleteToday I am smelling of Santal Rose from Space NK which I want to love but right now I don't. Bit old lady unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteCurrent favourite is L'Agent by AP. Just divine.
I was given Alien by Thierry Mugler last week and in theory it's everything I hate in a perfume but it's actually quite nice.
I highly recommend you looking into natural perfume. For Strange Women do some AMAZING scents (hello, HORSE?!) that are incredible and unique and just generally make a nice change from everything else on the market. http://www.etsy.com/shop/ForStrangeWomen
Over and out.
It's not the newest perfume out there, but I was treated to Paco Rabanne's Black XS this Christmas, yum! x
ReplyDeleteso curious about this fragrance! Now I need to try it..I actually love Viva Rock by Richmond..I think you might like it!

I gave this perfume to my mom as a christmas present and it smells SO good! It's perfect if you like sweet, sensual fragrances :)
ReplyDelete(P.S.: I didn't even notice the liquorice when I smelled it...)
I am today wearing the scent 'sweet harmony' by tromborg... it's vanilla with bits of citrus and that, too, was a Christmas present from my lovely aunt! I def recommend it!
ReplyDeletexx
Wow, that bottle is nice!
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a lot of different scents going on.
I tend to get one I like and then find it hard to get away from it. I do try but I get a bit perplexed when I'm in the shop. In the end I can't smell anything after all the testers so I give up.
Got a new for Christmas though so may take a leaf out of your book and review it soon!
Happy New Year!

I'm not a big fan of licorice, however, your review has me wanting to check out this perfume!
ReplyDeleteI hear so many good reviews of this perfume but unfortunately i just cannot stand the smell of liquorice, this perfume reminds me of sambuca!
ReplyDeleteI'll just have to stick to the ever faithful Armani Diamonds
xx
I recieved Organza by Givenchy for Christmas. It's definitely a more grown up smell that I will probably only wear in the evenings. I'm wearing Idylle by Guerlain today - love it! Happy New Year :) x
ReplyDeleteI love Diesel as a brand but I'm never such a big fan of their perfumes, maybe I should smell Loverdose after all :)
ReplyDeleteI got Miss Dior Chérie for Christmas and I'm totally in love with it!
I have this perfume and I absolutely love it! X
ReplyDeleteI love love love YSL Belle D'Opium, its my favourite one! Armani Code and Mania can't be beaten either! And of course, maybe some Britney tack thrown in somewhere too ;)
ReplyDeleteMmm sounds interesting! The thing that put me off this perfume entirely was the advert, utterly cringy! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KPRm6mvjg8) eeek!
ReplyDeleteI was lucky to receive Balenciaga perfume for Christmas, it has notes of violet and pepper, strange but unique. Have you smelt it? xxx
@Summer - definitely one to try before you buy :) I smell the liquorice immediately - but some people don't at all....hope you can get a sample/find a tester!
ReplyDelete@Le - okay off the top of my head is that the one packed full of cinnamon/clove? If yes, i really like that and actually one of my female friends wears that and adores it! If it's not that one then ignore me ;)
@Product Pixie - horse?! wow! got to check it out!
@talbs x - that's meant to be siminlar to this one so it's got to be good :)
@Claudia - thanks Claudia - I will have a look!
@Emerald Turquoise - ooh thats what i love most about perfume: different people notice different notes :) Hope she liked it :)
@HIGHSTREET FTW - ooh never tried that or heard of it! Must check it out!
@Ugly Duckling - i LOVE perfume - I think it's enticing and far more evocative than makeup....you could say I am addicted :) I know what you mean about testers though...happens every time in duty free :)
@PinkGlitter - definitely give it a go. spray it, walk away and see what you think!
@Rachel - haha i LOVE sambucca so it was always going to be okay for me :) I have never tried Armani Diamonds!
@Parveen - they both sound lovely!
never heard of this perfume but I might give it a sniff next time I see it:) I got tresor in love by Lancome and it's so lovely!
ReplyDelete@Candy and Treats - such a good classic! will always love miss dior :)
ReplyDelete@Katie - yay! glad you like it :)
@Julie - a girl after my own heart...can't forget the Britney tack!
@City Girls Fashion Box - I have it and it's a fantastic scent. Was totally surprised when I sprayed it on me as it evolves into something fantastic. Glad you got it!
@Rosie Anna - ah that's a lovely perfume!
Ha! I think I recently got a sample of this, need to go give it a sniff!
ReplyDeletefirst time i've heard of this perfume but sounds really interesting, i love quirky and unique scents like how this sounds xx
ReplyDeleteI think we probably have very similar tastes in fragrances if Une Bois Vanille has been haunting you!!! I'm currently being haunted by Tom Ford's Black Orchid and Tabac Vanille...
ReplyDeleteI definitely noticed the licorice note when I tested this, but it's just a bit too much like my HG Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb for me to purchase. And although Une Bois Vanille haunted me for years too, when I tested it against Jo Malone's Rosewater and Vanilla Intense Cologne, I found the JM worked better on me. But they're very similar in build.
Just got L de Lolita Lempicka for Christmas from the Boy and I am loving that, sweet, warm, and a grownup gourmand, just beautiful! x
I actually smell like Un Bois Vanille today! It is one of my favs, but I don't detect the liquorice on me at all. It's much more of a vanilla/almondy scent. I keep seeing Loverdose ads everywhere so I am glad I now know what it smells like.
ReplyDeletehttp://ohsofabulousdarling.blogspot.com/
All Diesel perfumes give me a headache now since I used to get them off friends when we were all still at school for Christmas and my birthday so I just can't stand the smell of anything they bring out perfume wise. I made my boyfriend get the Only The Brave aftershave which I'm in love with so I'll live vicariously through him when it comes to Diesel scents.
ReplyDeleteI've been smelling of Marc Jacobs Daisy, Lola and Oh Lola for weeks now. Not at the same time though but I was given Daisy for Christmas 2 years ago, Lola as a random present and I couldn't resist the urge to buy Oh Lola while in New York. I'm a Marc Jacobs freak. I just hope I don't get sick of those perfumes.
I cannot wait to smell that one! I must admit during winter, i smell like Opium from YSL it's extremely strong, but oh so magical.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby got me Chanel No 5. my first No 5 and true classic!
ReplyDeleteI got Loverdose as well from my sister and think it's fab for a night out. I also got Givenchy Hot Couture which has been my favourite for years. If you like Loverdose give Hugo Intense a whiff - it's another one of my faves.
ReplyDeletehttp://confessionsfromundertheduvet.blogspot.com/
I got Stella in the beautiful Print Collection packaging and Fresh Brown Sugar. I've also been loving a sample I have of Burberry Body but I'll probably wait until next fall/winter to buy it as I think of it more as a cozy sweater kind of fragrance.
ReplyDeleteI smell of Lady Million by Pacco Rabanne (sp?) I love it. :) x
ReplyDeletehttp://lipsticksandmascara.blogspot.com
Loverdose is absolutely amazing! ♥
ReplyDeletesmelly water lol. you are too funny laura. i have never heard of this fragrance. i didnt know diesel made teeny fragrances. i love the way you describe the way it smells, such a talent!
ReplyDeleteToday I smell of Brazilian drink Caipirinha. I'm wearing L'Artisan's Batucada - it is a fresh, fizzy lime fragrance that's a fun day scent. I usually love heavy, rich scents, but it's fun to switch it up every once in a while and wear something really fresh and easy. :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes perfumes smell completely different when on my wrists and when on my neck too. Bothers me SO much! haha
ReplyDeletehwalkeechan.blogspot.com
I really want to try it! I'm a sucker for vanilla scents! My fav is Black XS, it's just gorgeous! I def will be giving this a smell next time I see it. I'm not really into 'sophisticated' smells and to be perfectly honest, I'm not very fond of many of the classic Chanel fragrances and I'm not ashamed to admit it! haha
ReplyDeletehttp://the-russian-girl-diana.blogspot.com/
OMgosh Un Bois Vanille is one of my favorite scents of all time! I'm surprised you haven't tried Hermes Ambre Narguile.....very warm and spicy. I will say that for some reason the cinnamon note is very heavy on me but it's till an intriguing fragrance ;-)
ReplyDeleteI just got the Jo Malone Cologne Collection for Christmas, my post (if you wanna read it) http://blushcrush1.blogspot.com/2012/01/jo-malone-cologne-collection.html
ReplyDeleteI love JM fragrances, but must admit that Loverdose is gorgeous, a couple of my friends wear it, and it's beautiful x
The Liquorice concept is so interesting, I must give this a try!

Lately i'm in love with Armani Femme code perfume, have u tried it? I would luv to know ur opinion on it, as most perfumes u like i like them too:p
ReplyDeleteI bloody love this! I even blogged about all the reasons I should hate it... and I just don't! I find it's very similar to another favourite of mine, JM Vanilla & Anise. I always get Boots vouchers for Christmas. Went on a massive perfume shop on Boxing Day (Elie Saab, EL Sensuous, Very Irresistible Intense, Stella, Shalimar Inital, Guilty and Loverdose x2!!!) And as of right now, I just walked in the door with Belle D'Opium - another Boots sale purchase. Like I need any more... Might have to sniff out Un Bois Vanille now too! x
ReplyDeleteI am so tempted to try this now, despite dismissing it like the big perfume snob I am. I have and love un bois vanille but I fail to smell the liquorice or coconut which makes me sad. There is a brief mention of un bois vanille on my blog, which reminds me I really must get a full review up soon. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it if you do get round to buying it xx
ReplyDeleteVery good description, it fits the scent perfectly! However I tried it and have failed to like it somehow. I did try the Serge Lutens but then got swayed by the sales assistant. She sprayed Guerlain Spirituouse Double Vanille on me. After having run around the stored smelling it over and over again on me, I turned and splurged. Vanilla and incense? Count me in, I've gone through half a bottle already. You might want to give it a whirl, the scent is more complex than the Serge Lutens, but a lot more sophisticated. A definite must-try!
ReplyDeleteI love the bottle, I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving black xs, although I love the male one even more!
ReplyDeleteTechnically every perfume stimulates the hypothalamus since it is responsive to smell, as well as light, and it also controls homeostasis, sleep cycles, motor function and hundreds of other processes. You don't need a Psychology degree to spot that BS - although I do have one ;)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo-must try out this scent! Thanks for posting Laura :)

Perfumes from Yas "The Royal Name in Perfumes". They are based in UAE, I love these perfumes and they always do 3 for 2, well worth a visit.
ReplyDeleteI got this for christmas too ^^, it is soo good to me it is like licorice but with a sweet taste. Love iit <3
ReplyDeleteI had a sniff of this perfume one day in Boots and all i could think was 'Sambuca', really wasnt for me! I got Prada candy for Christmas and that is my current fave!

ReplyDeleteI love liquorice... i was lusting after some jelly belly liquorice candles in Westfield yesterday. I think I might go and try this one out! When people ask me what I want to xmas I need to start being more creative...!
ReplyDeleteReally want to try this out. I keep telling myself that I should get a new perfume, but I love my Lola too much to not wear it. I try to wear other ones but I find myself missing Lola if I'm not wearing it.
ReplyDeletei totally understand your love for perfumes since i am a total perfume hoarder :) as always almost all my christmas gifts were perfumes :) currently i am loving balenciaga and jimmy choo one...
ReplyDeletethis sounds interesting! im always on the look out for new exciting perfume launches (its becoming an obsession)......
ReplyDeletecurrently wearing jo malone pomegranate noir in the evenings or calvin klein euphoria for an every day scent :)
x
Ah, scent, my favourite subject!! I've tested Loverdose and lovely, describes it perfectly. Wearing an old fave Givenchy, Very Irresistable right now. Like Lady Million, lots of warmth for this time of year. Gucci is my go to brand for perfume though, Guilty; Flora; Gucci 2; Rush and possibly (though panned by many) my all time fave, Rush 2. Currently lusting Herrara, VIP 212 Private Party and Molecule 01 (after reading the fab review on A Model Recommends). :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great perfume, I love licorice! I did get a perfume for Christmas, Chanel Chance Eau So Fraiche. I love it!
ReplyDeletekeepcalmandcarrylipstick.blogspot.com
I received Marc Jacobs daisy nice for summer
ReplyDeleteI am liking the sound of this one I wonder if it's in Australia yet
pinksaphire85.blogspot.com
I got Organic Glam Orange Blossom for Christmas. I like it, it smells of... orange blossom (!) and is almost a little plain but I quite like mixing different perfumes so that works for me. I get a little taken aback every time I spray it, but I really like the way it settles after about half an hour.
ReplyDeleteAquolina Chocolovers. lol I smell good! I want so many niche perfumes, but the cost would be in the thousands. Chocolovers is my guilty indulgence.
ReplyDeleteIt sounded nice until the licorice. Not a fan. I've got to find a nice high end perfume that doesn't give me a headache.
ReplyDeleteStella is my go to, it is absolutely fantastic. Pity it dissipates so quickly!!
ReplyDeleteI am interested to smell this now, however I am a little dubious because I am not a huge liquorice fan!! Great review :)

Talking about guilty pleasure perfumes, I got the Jingle G from Harajuku Lovers... Lovely packaging and smell, I'm wearing it today.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I really need to try it! Sounds really interesting! :)
ReplyDeleteI actually don't mind the dagger through the heart bottle design.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of this one, but have yet to try it. I think I'll have to go out and purchase it now because of you (:
ReplyDeletetailoredseams.blogspot.com
The bottle is so cute!!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my new blog:
http://bucketofcoffee.blogspot.com/
I looove Dahlia Noir by Givenchy. I think it's a total bridal scent (meaning that in a positive way) The notes are not that special or original (everyone is using pink pepper now). But the combination of al those notes is just lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend buys my perfume for me, and he ranges for something I'd want at 16 or 60. This year he wanted a pretty bottle so I got Vera Wang Princess. So will spend the next week smelling of a vanilla teeny bop. Oh well bless him, it's the thought that counts!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.
ReplyDeleteI love your perfume reviews, so detailed.
I was given three for Christmas/ Birthday, two i'm indifferent about - Boss Femme and Jimmy Choo. But i'm now in love with Chanel Cristalle Verte, so pretty, fresh and that classic powdery Chanel fragrance. Have you tried it?
The doll on fashion
I got Vera Wang, love it!

I just got Vivienne Westwood's Boudoir which I thik you would LOVE - it's so unusual...I sniffed every bottle in the store and after a while they all smelt the same but this stood out. I can't even describe it - deffo have a gander next time you can!
ReplyDeleteHi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI got 'Freak' by Ilamasqua, which I am currently smothering myself (as well as my colleagues at work) in.
My favorites include 'Black XS', 'Lady Million' by Paco Robanne, Amour Amour by Cacheral was another one that I wore to death......and DKNY Apple.
I quite want to try Boss Orange..........just getting back into perfumes again........im no expert though tend to take the risk and buy without having a sniff first lol
Hope you had a good christmas x
There's just one problem... :) When you start use Serge Lutens you want more and more and more, and there are so many that smell so amazing, Un Bois Vanile will not be enough :))
ReplyDeleteLaura why dont you do videos anymore?
ReplyDeleteThe bottle looks gorgeous :)

ReplyDeletesounds interesting. i'm going to have to find this and get a whiff! wearing BBW black amethyst.
ReplyDeleteChloe EDT is my current favorite. It's just a perfect clean airy fragrance and I'm loving it. I recently ordered YSL Parisienne online and am eagerly waiting for it to come in the mail!
ReplyDeletei wear Dolce Gabbann the ONE :) also love Tierry Mugler WOMANITY :)
ReplyDelete
