Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation

At the beginning of the year a padded envelope containing three bottles of Wake Me Up arrived on my doorstep - courtesy of Rimmel.

I was happy. I am a foundation junkie and believe it to be the one make up product that can totally elevate your mood and make you feel like an improved version of yourself.

I also like a glowy finish and this promised an "anti-fatigue effect and radiant glow" for a price tag well under £10. Awesome.

So why it's taken me two months to try this out I cannot explain but last week I did and from the initial pump I knew I was going to like it.

It wasn't the artificial cucumber/salad scent that had me head over heels at that stage - it was the texture. This is one of those liquid foundations that almost mimics a gel consistency and immediately reminded me of Chantecaille Just Skin. Could this be the dupe I have been looking for?

As always I used a kabuki to apply it and the finish deepened my love for it. I can only describe it as "fresh" - like your skin naturally appears poreless, completely even in pigmentation and finely glowing.  Even under the eyes, this works well, never looking heavy but reassuringly invisible.

This natural finish business means that it's what I would describe as the lighter side of medium coverage. One or two pumps will serve you well but if you needed some extra war paint to hide those pesky "imperfections" then this is buildable.

It takes about a minute to set so you have some time to work it in - no frantic blending a la Colorstay - and once it sets it stays on my skin for about 5-6 hours. After that time my nose shine adds to the glow factor and that's when my vanity forces me to touch up. But I don't powder over Wake Me Up and I don't use any additional concealer - if I did then maybe it would last for the 10 hours that Rimmel is quoting.

(Some pointless photos added for your viewing pleasure :)

So it's perfect then?

Well this is obviously the subjective point and your opinion is going to depend on skin type and personal preference.

  • I am not sure how fantastic this would be for dry skin. I have a little dry skin area on my nose and it doesn't sit so well there.
  • The oilier skins might struggle keeping this on during the day without some serious powdering action. It's just not one of those foundations that tightly bonds to your skin like Studio Fix Fluid or Colorstay.
  • There are "illuminating particles" suspended within the formula. Honestly, I didn't notice any glittery bits until I was in the artificial light of my bathroom and inspecting a swatch on the back of my hand. I didn't notice them on my face and whilst they are no doubt in the formula I think they dissipate post-kabuki blending.

The biggest "but" however is the colour range. 6 colours in all and none of them seem either that fair or dark. I was sent Ivory, Soft Beige and True Nude. You would think that Ivory would be really light wouldn't you? But no, it's not. I tried it the other day and once it dries on the skin it looked more like a sandy shade to me. And yes, they do dry a little, tiny bit darker so be aware of that when shopping.

Like Gemsmaquillage said in her post, this is probably the weakest part of their proposition. Of course, drugstore brands like Rimmel are limited by the amount of merchandising space they physically have available in store. That little stand can only hold so much and as a result they have to offer the "most likely sold" shades to maximise revenue. I understand that completely but for a brand this big - and one that is trying to engage with a mass audience - it's a kick in the teeth to serve up just 6 varying shades of beige.

So all in all...

If your skintone fits into the range that Rimmel are marketing to then yes, I would absolutely recommend this for you.

Even if we forget about the fact that it's affordable, this is a great product. It's nice to work with, makes your skin look good, lasts a decent amount of time, doesn't smell horrendous and I would pick this over Chanel Vitalumiere, Bourjois Healthy Mix and Revlon Photoready any day of the week.

PS. This is not currently available in the US but is set to launch at some point at the end of this quarter (I think!)

Thanks for reading :)

  5. I have this and I really like it! Their lightest shade does seem to be a touch lighter than usual as I normally find Rimmel really orange but Ivory is fine on me (I'm NW15!)

There's definitely glitter in mine but you, Gemsmaquillage and Lipglossiping have all said it doesn't contain glitter and the photos don't make it look glittery either - makes me wonder if PR samples were a slightly different, older formula?

  6. Trying it out, so far so good, nice effect, but I would never pick it over Healthy Mix, NEVER:)

  8. Thanks for sharing this Laura. I have tried all three that you have picked it over and currently use Revlon Photoready.

I was almost going to look at buying the Chantecaille this weekend but may save some pennies...and pounds and plump for the Rimmel and give it a shot.

Out of interest, have you ever tried Bare Minerals foundation?

  9. I received a sample of this in a magazine and instantly threw it away as I normally hate Rimmel Foundations, however this review has made me want to try it! It looks lovely on your skin!

I'm a healthy mix girl so would be interested to see if I prefer it. 6 shades though? Come on Rimmel its 2012!

  16. Thanks for mentioning the US launch. I was already sold when you mentioned it in the same sentence as Just Skin. And now Face and Body?! This must be good. ps Your video on FB convinced me to try it and I am very glad I did.

  17. I just got this, have been using it for a few days and I really like it, I found it gives me a nice even finish but I haven't noticed a real "glow" I have to apply it with my fingers! or I've used the body shop foundation brush, I first tried it with a sponge & it didn't really blend that well.
There was a 3 for 2 offer so I picked up their new match perfection blusher in 001 Light & I love it! It goes on lovely with this foundation! :) x

  18. Can't wait to get my hands on this foundation, just hoping they have a shade light enough for me.

  19. That's dissapointing about the poor shade range. I wish drugstore brands would just perfect 2-3 formulas and provide them in a wider range of shades than have 7 different formulas with 4 shades in each. Also I'm not liking how Revlon and now apparently Rimmel are including glittery shimmer in foundation. :(

  20. Your skin looks amazing! I love these kinds of foundations that's dewy and not too heavy, so i'm definitely going to try it if they have my colour :) xx

  21. Can't wait for this to release here in the states! I tried Clean Finish, but it broke me out. I'm testing out the Match Perfection right now.

  22. I knew it was going to be this foundation that you were hinting at posting about! I just got it myself, and am very much enjoying how human it can make me look after a late night, or an early morning!
I'm not a huge make up junkie, so its nice to know that someone like yourself, who has much more experience of using a variety of different price range products, gives this approval-I feel like I'm doing ok by picking this one out myself!

I love you review and have looked to see If i could pick up any tips. But like you I use a brush and dont powder. Think that it may just be my skin (normal really)

    Thanks for sharing!!

  35. I loved Rimmel London's 25 Hour Foundation and have been excited to try this one based on my love for the 25 Hour one but like you said the shade range isn't all that great.
I'm paper white and only a small amount of make up brands cater to my ghostlike complexion so even the lightest foundation from Rimmel London gives me the dreaded and incredibly obvious dark face, white neck thing.
Although after reading this review I think I may need to pop into Superdrug and get this foundation. With any luck it'll still work as well after being mixed with Barry M's white foundation.

However this came in perfect time as my Estee Lauder Double Wear Light has just ran out and I'm loving the price.

Thanks for this post, Laura :) was wondering if you could do a review on a highlighter at some pount?

  39. I was going to try this foundation but might hold off a while as my skin can be a little dry in places. I might just get a kubuki though instead, sounds like THE way all those in the know are applying base products at the moment. Liking the ponytail, its nice to do something different with the hair occasionally and this one still shows off the length! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bah! I have snake skin after the Winter so think I'll give this one a wide berth. You look stunning in these pictures Laura, loving that denim on you xx

  41. Might give this one a whirl at some point, L'oreal has also brought out another 'luminous' finish foundation & primer im keen to try.

Agree with you on the colour range, I've always found this particular poor and slightly orange toned and you would of thought with how big they are as a company this would of been improved! The fact that you can hardly see the colour difference between the 3 they sent you says it all really! Rimmel if your reading this.........SORT IT OUT xxx

  42. I have had this foundation for about three weeks now and am absoultely 100% in love with it! I have combination skin, dry on the cheeks, oily in the tzone and i find that if i moisturise my dry bits beforehand and powder my tzone after it stays perfect all day long! For me it's like a Nars Sheer glow wannabe that almost meets the mark but not quite, considering the price difference though this makes it a true winner as it is only a teeny tiny bit not as good!

  43. I completely agree about the poor shade range. However I do really like it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. the shades thing sucks.. im really fair and finding the right shade foundation has always been a hassle for me.. The bourjous healthy mix in #51 is the first light shade i found thats not pink! In the drugstore range that is..

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow, six shades doesn't seem like a lot to work with.. There are plenty of products I've wanted to try but haven't because they only come in a few "standard" shades. Light, medium & dark always makes me laugh. How can a company expect that to work across such a variety of skin tones and warm & cool-based complexions? Anyway, since you are self-professed foundation junkie, may I ask what foundation is your all-time favorite?

    ReplyDelete
  46. i find the shades are always limited in highstreet brand foundation/concealer.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would love to love this, but unfortunately I have dry skin and flakiness is not cute. Maybe they will expand the shade selection for the US release?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Your skin looks beautiful here Laura! Also loving the side pony.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This look great on you but unfortunately doesn't work as well for me :(
I agree it makes your skin glow and look really healthy but it also made me really shiny after about an hour. I kept having to apply powder throughout the day to stop my skin looking so oily! and I don't even have generally oily skin which was very strange.. at least it was reasonably priced and I didn't go and waste a lot of money on it.

  52. Oh god! I got a sample that came from a magazine, even though it wasn't my skin tone, I tried it, just to test it. oh oohhhh as soon as I was applying I notice like "glitter" on my face, I thought that I might touched some eyeshadow of mine or something, but no it was the foundation, was a immediatly a dislike for me, and then later on like you said people with oily skin will struggle it's true. My T-zone is oily, specially my nose, it was hell, I felt like the foundation was melting away from my face >.<. I guess I won't be buying this foundation, thank god for magazine samples haha.
