The high street has taken over my make up bag.
This realisation hit me last week when I counted 6 or 7 drugstore products which I not only love but sort of think I can't live without.
This is a fairly new thing. Whilst I have always been loyal to the cheaper end of the spectrum when it comes to mascara and the odd lip product, I would naughtily sneak over to MAC and Space NK for a bit of prestige. Now I am not knocking the expensive stuff - I remain a product junkie to the core and I am still representing some grossly overpriced stuff too - but lets just say that at the moment I am happily making use of some cheap (and great) products.
Here's my run down and not all products featured in the photo below...that's just to make the post look pretty :)
Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation - the packaging might be a bit on the tacky side and the colour range might be dismal but for whatever reason this now coats the plains of my face and makes me feel fresh and glowing. Soft Beige (200) is the colour of choice at the moment. Full review here!
Bourjois Healthy Mix concealer in Light radiance - reserved for days when I feel very tired (i.e., look very rough), this is placed under the eyes, around the nose and sometimes mouth. It kills redness, reminds me of MAC's Select Moisturecover and doesn't collect in any fine lines. It's not as opaque as Make up For Ever's Full Cover concealer (amazing stuff!) but the trade off is a much a lighter and easier to work with consistency. Recommend!
Rimmel Kohl Eyes in Black - one day I fancied the smudgy look that only a kohl pencil can deliver and so I picked this up. I expected it to be good - well it Kate M wear it.... - but I didn't expect the black to be so strong and to be so easy to apply. I wouldn't say it lasts as long as say a MAC PowerPoint but it also doesn't give a distressed smudgy eye a la Stila Kajal.
L'oreal Super Liner Carbon Gloss - just rename this the liner that keeps giving because this NEVER seems to dry out. I must have had this tube for about 12 months and whilst the makeup expiry police would frown upon that there is no way I am throwing this out. If you want an easy to work with liquid liner nib and a dark black colour then there is no other choice (other than maybe Illamasqua). MAC and the likes of Le Metier de Beaute don't even come close in terms of quality.
Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel eyeliner in black - another eyeliner - I am out of control! Anyway my MAC Blacktrack ran out and I decided to try this. It was a bit of a revelation. Just as long lasting, just as pigmented and basically, exactly the same as any of Estee Lauder's brand versions. Thank you Maybelline. If you did more interesting shades you may even give Shu Uemura a run for their money.
Sleek Lash Out mascara - I had medium/low expectations of this for some reason but as soon as I applied it I love the effect. Very separated and lengthened with an inky black pigmentation. The delicate little brush that it comes with also makes it perfect for lower lashes. In fact that's where I tend to use it and then rely on my trust Max Factor Masterpiece MAX. In fact, scratch that, you HAVE to try the Max if you want defined and full lashes that you can build to crusy spider leg status should you desire...not that I would do that of course :p
Kanebo KATE Designing Eyebrow kit in EX-4 - so this belongs within a Japanese drugstore (talk about bending the rules of the post) but its included as it's a cheap product that manages to deliver. I will link to it here - Link! - as then you will see what it looks like. Think little plastic case with three brow colours contained within. My love for this is solely levied at the fact that the dark brown (or natural brown as they call it) is completely flat. It has undertones of absolutely nothing except brown and so for those of us irritated by reddy toned brow products, this will be your new holy grail. NB I have nothing to do with the seller but included as example!
So these are some of my current loves. I would have included Sleek's Peach Perfection - THE perfect tinted lip balm complete with nauseating faux sweet scent - but I just ran out of my back-up's back-up...as you do :)
Now I am going to ask you this question and I already know that it will lead me to some possible purchases but...
What are your favourite drugstore makeup products of the moment?

What are your favourite drugstore makeup products of the moment?

I keep wanting to try the Bourjois Healthy Mix concealer, may have to give it a go xxx
ReplyDeletewww.misslv.com
I am loving No7's Vital Enlightening highlighter, you NEED to try it you will be very impressed!
ReplyDeleteLOVING the Wake me Up and Healthy Mix too! Rimmel Match Perfection concealer is amazing, you have to try it! X
ReplyDeleteI havent tried any of these but now want to!! I have been loving Boots No 7 floral brights collection (the highlighter and nude pink lipstick) (I need to post on these!!) I have also been liking Real Techniques brushes, witch skincare anti blemish setting powder and Elf bush in mellow mauve. Clinique chubby stick in graped up is still a permanent makeup bag fixture xx
ReplyDeleteAs I already wrote you on Twitter, I bought the Rimmel foundation after you mentioned it, and it does feel so nice on the skin!
ReplyDeleteMy face is a disaster after a neverending belgian winter, and even high end foundations looked horrendous on me..
Wake Me Up by Rimmel cuddles my dry skin in a way I was not expecting - now, there's no magic, it still does look pretty bad, but at least this does help not showing it!
Thank you for the tip!
baci bella! x
Have you tried the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation? I used to love NARS Sheer Glow but am now head over heels for Healthy Mix. It's so light and natural and yet it has decent coverage and oil controlling abilities.
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Anca
I love the Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation! I've been using it almost every day since it came out xx

I have re-purchased Maxfactor's Second Skin Foundation (number 75, Golden) after using it in 2010. I moved on and tried other things, but picked up a bottle recently and am really enjoying it. It doesn't feel heavy, doesn't break me out, lasts well on my oily/combo skin, and looks like my skin but better.
ReplyDeleteRevlon lip butter in Sugar Frosting. Perfect nude color and feels so nice on the lips :).
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Definitely want to try that Rimmel foundation after your review. I haven't been using a lot of drugstore products lately, but would La Roche Posey count? I am in mad love with their Toleriane cream. It's the best moisturizer I've ever used (and I've slapped on a ton, including the famous Embryolisse). Pretty much loving everything La Roche Posey right now! :)
ReplyDeleteI really really really like Boots Time Delay Restoring eye Cream with SPF 15, it's really for mature skins (that's me!) and it's anti ageing, and I love the consistency, and I have to say I do see an improvement. I also love Garnier's Miracle Skin Perfector, absolutely wonderful when I'm in a hurry and gives a great coverage and finish.
ReplyDeleteReally wanna try that foundation, sounds really good. Same with the concealer. I love the Collection 2000 lasting perfection concealer and my favourite lipstick is Rimmel's Nude Delight!

This week i've been trying the new l'oreal lumi magique and love it! Haven't found a l'oreal foundation I have liked since quick stick (still get pangs of longing) but this stuff is amazing! Good coverage and a lovely glowy finish. Also have the primer and bb cream and they are both very nice to wear, I have oily skin and the Garnier bb cream gave me a rather shiny face but the l'oreal is matte and long lasting, and get ridiculously happy seeing the white cream blend to suit my skin tone :) great post xx
ReplyDeletei love sleek's blush in suede, it just seems to add a lovely warmth to my face without shimmer or unnecessary redness x
ReplyDeleteReally like the maybelline eyeliner, you should try the collection 2000 lasting perfection concealer, its holy grail material! Also I love the elf blushes, does that count as drugstore? They're cheap and really pigmented!

Love your make up posts, Laura!
ReplyDeleteThis is the second time today that I've heard good things about the Sleek mascara, I must try it. L'Oreal, Volume Million gives amazing lashes but is a bit of a diva to apply. On a day to day basis, I can usually rely on a Max Factor mascara though Fusion disappointed me.
I also really like the Collection 2000 Blushalicious shimmer that Holly from YM Beauty posted last year and have just purchased my second.
I remember you tweeted recently about make up for pale skin, if you discover any good products or looks, please can you blog them? I desperatly need some inspiration, I've just had my annual tanning disaster (one every year, guaranteed!) and have a feeling that yet again I'll be trying to embrace my true pale complexion this summer.
nice to see that drugstore is taking over, helps the bank balance haha X
ReplyDeleteMaybelline cream blush in peach - It applies beautifully... best cream blusher ever!!xxx
ReplyDeleteI love naturally collection from boots at the moment! x
ReplyDeleteWe never get the cool drugstore stuff here, no Maybelline cream shadows or bouncy blushes, no l'oreal cream blushes... :( We do have 2 very cheap German brands called Catrice and Essence that have some unique eyeshadows, trendy nailpolishes, good brow gel or powder... all priced around 2-3€
ReplyDeleteOther than these I love the Maybelline colorstay lipsticks.
love your blog Laura!
ReplyDeletelately i've been loving l'oreal's mat morphose/magich souflee foundation (depends on where you live). it gives a nice matte finish (hence the name), it gives me a little bit of colour which is always nice in the winter (keep in mind it runs a lot darker then it actually is), it's a dream to blend and therefor perfect for non-morning people like me :)
sleek contour kit in light, great contour, cheap looking highlighter thats included in it i wouldnt bother with.
ReplyDeletesleek blusher in suede, lovely and natural looking.
m u a, love hearts lipbalm in sweet kiss, thought it was going to be cheap crap at 2 quid but its so glossy and doesnt smell or taste of plastic, the colour is amazing in the pot, muted down on the lips.
the 2 bright peach blushers from the fashionista range at superdrug, gorgeous and cheap
estee lauder doublewear, staple
mac a perfect day lipstick, gorge
mac boldly bare or have to have it lipliners, neutral and great, staples
mac lingering eyebrow pencil, staple
mac bare study paintpot, staple
mac orb or blanc type eyeshadow, staple
mac by candlelight highlighter, staple
love all of the above so much.
I really love my wet n' wild eyeshadows in Nutty and Walking on Eggshells and my Milani blush in Luminoso. I also love my milani blush in Mai Tai and Sweet Rose but they're sadly discontinued :(.
ReplyDeleteThe sleek iluminator pen in the lightest shade is fab for under eye circles, I'm also loving their eyebrow powder/gel!x
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the L'oreal Super Liner Carbon Gloss, it is the most amazing liquid liner I have used. The Topshop Cream blushes are a favourite high street product of mine at the moment. x
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I've been looking to try a new foundation for quite a while now, and the rimmel might just be the perfect replacement :) x
ReplyDeletecupcakesandflowers.blogspot.com

The Loreal liner literally never dries up! I've had mine for at least two years (slightly gross I know) but I've used it at least every other day for that time and its still going strong!
ReplyDeleteAs far as drugstore products go, you have to try the Loreal kohl eyeliners (super pigmented) and I cannot live without my Garnier tinted eye roll on.
Makeup for Biochemists
xx
I really rate drugstore make-up - those products definitely outweigh expensive products in my make-up bag!
ReplyDeletevictoriasprocrastinationproject.blogspot.com
Great post, I'm trying to embrace cheaper make up to save some pennies! I love the loreal eyeliner it's my all time favourite x
ReplyDeleteThe products I am keen to try are ones which still haven't been released in AUS yet. I want to try the Rimmel Foundation and the Revlon Lip Butters. Always have to wait for so long for things to be released here!
ReplyDeleteTopshop cream blushes - amazing! I guess they can be classed as drugstore lol xx
ReplyDeleteOne product I think is amazing quality and that I never hear anyone talk about is No7 Stay Perfect Eye Mousse in Fudge. It is sable in a mousse texture, you need the tiniest amount and it does not budge all day. Can't really ask for more.
ReplyDeletesuper drug beauty blender dupe :), and loreal lumi magique foundation are the ones i am using from drugstore at the moment, so happy with both of them!
ReplyDeleteI envy you! i never find the drugstore cosmetics to work for me so i always go back to prestige.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had Bourjois in the US. I like to see things in person before buying them at a later time online. I really want to get my hands on the Healthy Mix foundation, or the serum version.
ReplyDeletedrugstore product i'm loving at the moment? my beloved 17 Mirrorshine lipstick in Belle. It never leaves my make-up bag. Products come and go but it's the 1 product I can't live without. It's my go to lipstick. I highly recommend it. Very similiar to Mac Hue. Not that I own Hue but I've seen swatches to prove my claim. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove your post , thanks for share your experience with those products :)
ReplyDeleteRIght now I'm really loving the Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour lipsticks. There's a wide range of colors and they have great lasting power. :)
ReplyDeletekeepcalmandcarrylipstick.blogspot.com
OMg! I'm also an absolute lover of maybelline's gel liner!
ReplyDeletei'd also recommend loreal's infallible eyeshadows or maybelline's tattoo eyeshadow. not sure if your eyelids are oily or not but they work fine for me without primer.
so glad drugstore products have upped their quality! hope this helps.
love your blog!
You should check out Bourjois Flower Perfection foundation or their new one, 123 Perfect foundation as they're both awesome and for some reason only being released this sandy side of the pond!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like I must purchase that Rimmel foundation! Right now I'm liking Essence lip glosses. :)
ReplyDeleteWith no doubt, it will have to be Collection 2000 Cream Puff Moisturising Lip Cream. I have one in the shade Cotton Candy and it just adds life to my face. It applies very smoothly, smells like ice cream, stays on for a substantial amount of time and comes off the lips evenly (and of course costs £2.99). I totally recommend it.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny...I've noticed the same thing happening to my own makeup bag! i've replaced my bobbi brown tinted moisturiser with No7 triple protection and replaced my bobbi brown mascara with an Avon super shock one, also love the Avon supershock gel eyeliners. I also CAN'T live without the No7 lip pencil in nude.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the highstreet makeup, I've been buying 70% drugstore makeup these past few months as they're always releasing new products with fab deals! I must try Healthy Mix concealer :)
ReplyDeletexx
I love the L'Oréal Super Liner and the Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel eyeliner, too! ♥
ReplyDeleteI bought the Wake Me Up Foundation last week and I've been loving it ever since! Gives such a nice finish :) xx
ReplyDeleteYour product reviews/features always make me want to hit the mall/drugstore. It's a blessing in disguise that a lot of the stuff you review are not available here in Singapore. ha ha ha
ReplyDeletea Revlon Colorstay eye pencil in black!it's great!stays on,easy to apply, doesn't need a sharpener
ReplyDeleteI love Rimmel's Kohl pencil and Maybelline's gel liner. I honestly love natural collection's blush in peach melba.. unbelievably cheap and the pigmentation is perfect (sleek's blushes basically have NO pigmentation and are double the price!) x
ReplyDeletei think the 3rd shade in the kate eyebrow kit is supposed to be 'nose shadow' or contour powder... lavshuca, another sub-brand of kanebo makes similar good brow powder too!
ReplyDeletemy current drugstore favs include lavshuca lipsticks (japanese), real techniques brushes (uk) and majolica majorca mascaras (japan) - yes, I can stand the pain to remove it because the effect worths it!
cheers,
jacq
I looked around and realized I had tons of Maybelline in my collection one day and had a similar reaction. Drugstores (high street) actually make great stuff!
ReplyDeleteFavourite drug store product is the Maybelline Instant Age rewind concealer.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm always up for trying new concealer in hopes to find a product that performs complete MAGIC!
I think I'll be trying Make up Forever's concealer next...
This is a great post! Really informative and interesting. Great to know drugstore products are still good enough against some higher end stuff.
ReplyDeleteA foundation I am currently loving is Revlon's Colourstay and I would recommend you try it.

Revlon is rocking my world at the moment, in particular Rich Sable eyeshadow, Coral lipstick and Charming nail polish, which is a chalky violet. Basically, Parma Violets in a bottle. Yes please. x
ReplyDeleteI am loving Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation and Cover Girl Lash Blast, these are actually the two drugstore products in my rotation right now. I am a sucker for pretty packaging so high end makeup is still winning over. Sad, I know
ReplyDeleteThanks for this lovely post and my current drugstore favorites are Bourjois 123 Prefect foundation and Revlon lip butter in peach parfait
ReplyDeleteThe Rimmel London eyeliner you mentioned was the first ever make up product I bought when I first started wearing make up 5 years ago and I still love it. Usually I'm over products pretty quickly but that eyeliner is just perfect.

Love it! Wake me up foundation is so nice xxxxx
ReplyDeleteWhat's the coverage like on the concealer?

ReplyDeleteI really need to try that Max Factor Masterpiece MAX mascara. You make it sound very amazing! Spider legs status? I'm there! haha =/
ReplyDeletehwalkeechan.blogspot.com
I will definitly try Loreal gloss I heard thats great!
ReplyDeleteLove the L'Oreal Super Liner!!!

Oh so AMAZING to finally find you again! I had seen your old YouTube videos, but it's fantastic to now find a current beauty outlet from you haha, love it! My favourite drugstore product would DEFINITELY be Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara...people think I'm actually wearing lashes with this stuff. Perfect.
