I waited a long time before I bought this lipstick.
I read the blogger's warnings - "chalky, uneven texture", "makes your teeth look yellow" etc. - and yet, despite my research I still went ahead and invested.
Now I am never going to say that I regret buying a Viva Glam lipstick - the charity element manages to negate any guilt - but I am going to be up front and say that this is not #totesamaze.
It's weird. I look at it in the tube and all I see is happy, summery, bright pink - the kind of shade that automatically pulls me in. Saint Germain did it. Pink Nouveau did it. But Nicki Minaj? Not really...
She goes on lighter than she appears in the tube. She makes my teeth look yellow (no gnashers in this review I am afraid!). She goes on a bit patchy (or maybe that's more down to the slapdash application technique? :) and the colour itself? It doesn't suit me in the same way that the aforementioned dupes do.
It's a bit too yellow toned. And I am sorry but a colour that I can't confidently smile with? Forget it! It's that lipstick that makes a statement for all the wrong reasons.
So this is all a bit negative, isn't it?
Well I am attempting to pull it back because all is not lost! Lipsticks that don't fit the bill are made to be mixed with other shades and I can confirm that this mixed with any beige or nude - particularly one with a creamy consistency - transforms this into a super wearable colour, with a great finish.
A couple of you made recommendations on my Facebook page about how best to mix this....I can confirm that MAC Shy Girl works great! So thank you Georgina for leaving that comment.
Any other mixing suggestions are welcome and if you are one of the lucky ones that loves this lipstick, tell us your secret! I am thinking this all hinges on skintone and my pale, sad face just doesn't cut it.
PS.
Here's a sneak peak of the next outfit post...
...at least I am mentally planning to wear either one of these pieces tomorrow.... The collar is obviously standard and part of my regular uniform but the jeans....the jeans!
Zara I tell you, you are killing me this season! :)

Zara I tell you, you are killing me this season! :)
Have you tried just lightly dabbing the lippy on? I find that if I've purchased one too shocking then just a gentle dab on the lips gives a better and more wearable look than smoothing it on :) And then mixed with a little balm. Ooh what about pairing it with that Body Shop balm 'Oui oui oui' I think? Didn't that transform lipstick colours?
ReplyDelete@Men4breakfast - still love your username after all these posts :) i have tried the dabbing but something about the tone of it doesn't quite work for me...i should reinvest in the Oui Oui Oui. That stuff made YSL's Lingerie Pink wearable. Well remembered :)
ReplyDeletezara is just amazing at the moment. i can't go in there! the nicki minaj lipstick looks good in that pic, at least with your mouth closed lol xx
ReplyDeleteI have been umming and arring over this lipstick since it came out but I think I will have to give it a miss. Anything that makes my teeth look yellow has to be a no go. Viva glam Gaga all the way. However, unlike some disappointing purchases you know the money it going to a good cause so money is not well and truly wasted :). x

Awwww this looks like such a pretty colour in the tube, what a shame! I'd love to see how it looks mixed with Shy Girl though. And I completely agree with you about Zara right now, bye bye bank balance!

I agree with Patricia, Zara is completely amazing at the moment. My blazer addiction/problem, however you want to label it, it really rearing it's ugly head..........entrapment, that's what it is! Can't wait to see the outfit. x x
ReplyDeleteit really is very bright! But i guess, the name goes with the tube.
ReplyDeleteZara is AMAZING, and im excited for the next post. the collar looks stunning!

Zara is always amazing, I've only recently discovered my love for it and can't stop now! So sad the lippy is chalky and gives you hobo teeth but if mixing it is the only option atleast you can make it work somehow :)

I can imagine this looks so cute with Shy Girl, especially because of the more creamy texture.. Can't wait for the next outfit post! Xx
ReplyDeleteI so nearly brought this lipstick at the weekend. Kind of glad I didn't now. Looks nice on your lips though but not sure about the yellow teeth thing...

Ooh I don't think I would of picked up this lipstick anyways because I don't suit bright colours, but its a shame its not as nice as it looks! But like you said you can always mix it with other lipsticks :) I purchased creme d'nude and its too pale for me but I think if I wear it with a tinted lipbalm it looks a bit better :)xxx
ReplyDeleteI knew there was a reason I didn't get that lipstick thanks for the review, you should try sephora's lipglosses just got the #11 pin up pinky shine and it's a nice bright pink that's not too opaque, if your a beauty insider you get it free with your points :)
ReplyDeleteOoh I appear to be the exact opposite - I love how this looks on (it's what I have on in my pic)! Satin finishes tend to be difficult to work with but I find if you use a brush to layer them over a nude lip liner (or one of a complimentary colour) you get a beautiful finish.
ReplyDeleteAs for Zara, I would live in there if I could! Everything they have in at the moment is right up my street!
x
I love the colour on myself as yellow toned pink is exactly what I need however I HATE the texture, it dries my lips out to hell :( xx
ReplyDeleteI saw this blouse the other day and loved the studded detail. There was also a mint/jade colour one with gold embroidery and the studded collar that I was also sorely tempted by.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame the lipstick isn't great, but at least the money went towards something other than a crap product :) Love this blouse, cannot wait to see the outfit x
ReplyDeletehttp://beautyembraced.blogspot.com
The lipstick is exactly the same on me! Will try it with another lippy xx
ReplyDeleteAhhh dooon't say bad things I really want to buy this lipstick!! I'm going to see Nicki Minaj soon eeek! I literally gasped at the studded collar. Excited to see the outfit!!xx
ReplyDeletesamanthassecret.blogspot.co.uk
#totesamaze. haha I love P'Trique!I didn't hear the bad things about this lipstick, but I still could't buy it. I just had a bad feeling about it.. shoppers instinct, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about the colour of this lipstick either, I don't get the hype around it ! Awww studded collar, EXCITING ! xx
ReplyDeletebutterfleyesblog.blogspot.com
Somehow I'm glad, that you don't like it either :)! I hated it on me as well and everybody seems to rave about it...
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting Laura! Think I might skip this lipstick, happy I read the review instead of just judging based on the #totesamaze photos! :P
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good week!

I've only used mine a couple of times and sadly its been neglected since. I can never find the right time to use it x
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not alone, I feel ridiculous wearing this but have been mixing it with Creme Cup.
ReplyDeleteIn swatches it looked like the perfect colour but in reality its just awful. My lips end up looking as if I've layered it on top of crushed cornflakes.
xo
Uhh! Is it my eyes or does the lipstick really look red but give pink? I prefer YSL gloss shades. I had been using them for over 2 years now and they work gr8 on my lips.
ReplyDeleteWhy would they even make a lipstick that makes teeth appear yellow?! stoooopid! Outfit post excites me, eeek studs!!! x
ReplyDeleteYes this one has the weirdest texture in the world. So annoying. This should have been one of the best MAC lipsticks to be honest!
ReplyDeletexoxo
I love that bright pink lipstick color!! It's perfect for summertime!

Wow it really does look a totally different colour on you than in the tube!! I'm not a big fan of MAC lipsticks so think I'll be avoiding this. Avoiding Zara at the moment too cos it's just soooo good!!
ReplyDeleteallaboutthegirlblog.blogspot.com xx
i quite like this lipstick but its not the best i've used xx
ReplyDeleteI don't know why but this really reminds me of a crayon. Not from the texture but just from the overall look of it. Definitely steering clear of it.
ReplyDeletewww.thwmusic.com
This lipstick has never really appealed to me either. I'm a bright lipstick lover too so I'm glad I overlooked this one!
ReplyDeleteI'm also incredibly intrigued by that studded collar...

i hate this on my when applied fully, but if i dab it out a bit its MUCH better, the patchyness goes away and I love it :)
ReplyDeleteI look like a 5 year old when I wear it, it just looks cheap :S I've been putting it on my cheeks... I always thought lipstick on the checks would be an oily mess but it works for me :) Going to have to try it with shy girl now though!
ReplyDeleteI did a bit of playing around with this at work, I'm not one to suit shades like this but wanted to make it work for my skintone. How about mixing it with a darker deeper pink like girl about town or something along those lines. Works really nicely! & I think this lipstick is definitely one for the lip brush.
ReplyDeleteOh this is such a pretty shade, it looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteLove the detailing on your top as well!

The detailing on your top is spectacular!!! ♥ it
ReplyDeleteIt's such a shame for a lipstick :/ But I love that top:)xx
ReplyDeletePlease.....Zara kills me EVERY season!!
ReplyDeleteHaha!
know what you mean about this lippie. I'm a big fan of the two you mentioned saint germain and pink nouveau. The latter mostly actually. But this is horrid. Such a shame isn't it!
That collar is awesome btw!

Come say hey at Ducklingtoswan.com! :)
I didnt even know that Nicki Minaj had made her own lipstick with MAC, it reminds me of Lady Gaga's colour from 2010 a lot.

Elena- blue velvet
Agree with you 100%.. something is just not right about it!
ReplyDeleteI agree that pink noveau is better in color and formula. I always throw something over or under Viva Nicki and it does brighten up other lipsticks or glosses nicely. I dont have a magic combo yet & tend to switch it up. The lasting power just isn't great though but i'm comparing it to Pink Noveau that lasts so well on me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warning!

I like so much how you look!
ReplyDeleteaw i feel like i should defend this lipstick a bit - pink nouv has always been my most loved/used shade, and i bought the nikki minaj after swatching it in Mac store. I have very pale skin and usually go for blue undertoned lipsticks, but this looks lovely and me and really makes my eyes look even bluer for some reasaon - really pop. It doesn't make my teeth look even slightly yellow either! I do love bright lipsticks though, shame it doesn't seem to work so well on other people :( i think the best way to tell is to go in store and try it on yourself first?
ReplyDeletei adore Zara at the moment though, can't get enough! great post x
I recently fell in love with a lipstick I bought ages ago: Gosh Darling 134. I bought it a few years ago when you recommended it :) It didn't work then but now it totally does! Have you tried mixing that with NickyMinaj lipstick?
ReplyDeleteYou've just sold me on this lipstick hahah xxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteThat is one crazzzy lipstick. Gotta have a lot of confidence to rock that!

The color is amazing! Looks very pretty on you!
ReplyDeleteZARA is killing everyone around the world this season! It's insane! I want to buy all the collection eheh
