When I was in the UK I paid a long overdue visit to American Apparel. I tried on some Disco Pants.
Don't laugh.
Well, actually you can laugh - they looked hideous on me and like Jeffrey Campbell Lita's are a trend I am happy to leave to the cool kids. Specifically, the cool younger kids.
I instead opted for the granny length chiffon skirts. I have ogled these for about a year. I hate the price of some AA stuff but ultimately I couldn't find anything anywhere else that hit the mark as well as this style does - so I sucked it up and bought two.
The one below is in the shade Tan - a rich, beige nude. Now I will admit that although this is double layered and prevents most underpant reveal, you still need to sport nude knickers. Anything brighter/darker is going to show through. On the plus side, despite the fact that these are polyester they are very light, don't cling even in the most humid of weather and refuse to crease. I wore my navy version on the plane home and after 7 hours of plane sitting, it remained in perfect shape.
They are £52 each - ouch!!!! - but I am glad that I just handed over my debit card and went for it. They are going to be perfect in the coming (unbearably hot) months.

Skirt: American Apparel - Link!
Top: GAP (very very old)
Belt: ASOS - Link!
Sandals: Nicoli
Sunglasses: Tom Ford Leila's
Bag: Celine
Apologies for the smug grin. It's my natural OOTD facial stance and emerges whenever the camera is focused on me :)
...think it will be a beauty post tomorrow. I have a lot of products I need to report back on :)
Happy Friday!

damn, that maxi is indeed perfect. AA either get it very right or very wrong!
ReplyDeletei really want a maxi skirt but can't figure out if it'll look amazing or horrible on me lol love them on everyone else
What a lovely skirt!!
ReplyDeleteI don't get the appeal for disco pants. Really, they do not leave anything to the imagination, unless you are a model it's not a flattering look IMO.
This looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you styled it! x
Gorgeous skirt, wouldn't pay that much though x
ReplyDeleteThat skirt is perfect and I love it with that top. It looks so sophisticated, but so easy to wear. I'm with you when it comes to disco pants! I'm too old and too curvy! You'd look way better in them than I would! x
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a skirt like that but when i try it on i look granny and frumpy :(
ReplyDeleteI enjoy a good smug face.esp since i do what is called "mirror face" smug and squinty eyed. I cant help it:(
love your OOTD:)
You always look so cute !
ReplyDeleteYour new glasses are looking goood! :) What a shame, the top is old. It is so pretty and pretty close to my ideal for a summer vest. Oh and that beach looks friggin gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing these up for a while now - particularly the black and white polka dots...having lived in my Whistles Carrie skirt during the heat I think I may just have to indulge - it's all about the midi length for me right now :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog.....however you cost me a fortune! I completely love this skirt and have the AA website open as I type this. The belt and the blouse look fab with the outfit too x
ReplyDeleteKat x
I love the skirt! :) I have never shopped at AA before!

ReplyDeleteI love love love the skirt. The material sounds great in the heat and I love the color and length. I also think the gold pop of the belt and the sparkly sandals look fabulous with it :)

Aww I have a soft spot for anything from American Apparel, that is such a gorgeous skirt and such a lovely colour! :) x

I've been eyeing these skirts up for ages too (couldn't be more different from disco pants, far less likely to cause fitting room trauma) but always worried about the slightly cropped length being a bit dodgy. You've convinced me to try on next time I'm in store, I love the way it sits on the ankle and is lovely and full and floaty, so pretty and wearable!

this is gorgeous, i love the skirt! so jealous i want to be on the beach aha lovely photos <3
ReplyDeleteSoo I have a really dumb question:
ReplyDeleteWhen assessing the price of the skirt, 52 pounds DOES translate to about $83 CAN. So yes, that is somewhat outrageous for a polyester skirt lol. However, I'm wondering whether it should be more of a 1 pound to 1 dollar conversion when taking into account average cost of goods, minimum wage, and overall standard of living. I find, at least with make up, most of products in England should be converted on a 1:1 ration (for people living IN England). Any attempts to covert them back to Canadian Dollars will leave me gasping, even at drugstore items.
Is that the same for clothes?
Gorgeous maxi - and the colour is versatile enough that you can wear it in a million different ways so the price is pretty good :P I have a similar one in black that you can wear as a dress too (as long as you belt it, or you look like you're wearing some sort of bin bag) so it's great for holidays etc!

Love the skirt - the colour is gorgeous! Really suits your skin tone as well. Sadly maxi skirts make me look like a hobbit!
