The Forever21 Fit & Flare Dress

I like the whole skater dress trend but the problem I find is that they are often too short/too arse skimming to feel comfortable for everyday. This realisation hit me last week when I tried on a version in Topshop. I really wanted to get it because it was black and I thought it would come in handy for my holiday. But it just wasn't right - and the price was far too high for basic cotton that I know will bobble after a couple of months.

Cut to this week and an innocent stroll into Forever 21 led me to the version pictured below. This cost $12.80 and I am super happy with it. It fits nicely, has a boat neck and scoop back and is just the right length for (nearly) 5ft 7inches me.

I read that some reviewers loved the length of this - and felt that it was appopriate enough for a professional environment - and some hated it and felt plebby wearing it. I think it just depends on your height and what you are going for.

Me? I love it and wore it sightseeing round Seattle today. This included long walks, another trip into Barney's to fondle the Celine handbags, a leisurely lunch which coincided with happy hour and of course, the Duck tour :) It's been a good day!

Dress: Forever 21 - Link!
Boots: Isabel Marant
Bag: Celine
Sunglasses: Prada
Lip stain: a combination of my new Tom Ford lipstick and sangria :)

Thank you for all your recommendations for Sephora purchases. I did buy Tarte Exposed and it's everything I wanted it to be - and more. There were of course a few other purchases made - a fellow blogger Alyson encouraged me on that front when we shopped in store together yesterday - and I will definitely share them with you soon :)

Have a great Tuesday/Wednesday!

  3. Great dress! I'm 5ft 9 so most skater dresses are waaaay too short for me! I found a great one in Zara last year but I still wear it mostly with tights just for a little more coverage

  11. I thought I was the only one with this skater dress problem :) I love the shape of those dresses and I am not that tall (5.5) but I have a big bottom (lol!) I have one dress like this (of course black!) but I wear it in the wintertime with long stockings and stuff :) Yours look gorgeous on you by the way, the boots really made the look good!

  12. Fab find, I'm 5ft 8 and most barely cover my rear. I've been on the lookout for a skater skirt I can switch around with tops, thus giving the world the illusion that I own multiple skater dresses hehe :)

  16. I bought this dress a while ago and love it too. The black and the flared hem is just too cute to pass up. You should have totally gotten a shot from the back. It's gorgeous.

  20. That dress is a great find. I agree - the perfect length!

  21. Wish you had included a pic of the back of the dress, because that's an appealing part too, the lower back scoop. I love that it kind of looks like a ballet leotard. But with my 5'1" height, it probably will look a bit long and silly on me :(

  22. Those boots are cute and the dress looks lovely, very classy. I brought a similar dress from River Island last Autumn/Winter but the fabric was thick and almost constatinied (how do you spell that?!). Quite smart but with a softer edge then pleats.
See that you're making the most of your new backdrop, I'd imagine the backdrops for your Vegas pics could be very different!!!

  25. Ah good ol' Forever 21. Every girl's bestfriend? Possibly. Love the dress and for that price- wow just wow. Looks great on you. You can also you it as a top just tucked into skinny jeans. What do you think? :)

  26. I know exactly what you mean about the too short styles! My ASOS one shrunk as well..

  27. This is such a perfect length!

Im 5'11'' and this style would really suit me if they weren't always so damn short. I always feel like I'd be flashing to anyone within a 20 metre radius! I may have to make a sneaky purchase of this, the mid sleeves and blank canvas make it too good to refuse :P

Talk about a bang for your buck! Wow!
Hope you are enjoying the States & its crappy Olympics coverage (sorry about the time delay).

  29. I agree about the length of skater dresses - I'm only 5'4" and many are far too short for even me. I love this dress on you, very classy xx

  40. Would love to know what the name is to the celine and colour! I got confused with each one and this looks amazing! Also would you recommend them as a 'classic bag' that will never date? Really thinking of getting one come October time but dont want it to become another craze bag.

  45. I just headed over and purchased this without a second thought (Hope I don't regret it later) but truthfully, I find myself leaning more and more towars skater dresses especially since I've been browsing the ASOS site a bit more. They have a nice selection too.

  51. i hear you! i bought a skater dress from ASOS a few months back, it was black and with a lovely cutout pattern on the neckline.. it was pretty and flattering.. but when i wore it and oh dear god i wore it to meet the bf's family for the first time.... it was a tad short and i accidently bent over to pat the dog.... HORRIBLE! i felt air swooshing in and my knickers sort of felt the sunrays!
i was so mortified to be honest. luckily i was still fed with some yummy roast dinner and yorkshire puddings :)

ps. i wanna hangout with you too! hahaha come to western australia! hahah

  58. Les chaussures Isabel Marant est la quintessence de l'été. L'espadrille est une chaussure de style classique coin qui semblent apparaître chaque fois que vêtements griffés se déchaînent pour les mois plus chauds.
