Marc Jacobs makeup haul/review

If I was going to summarise my experience with Marc Jacobs makeup I would say this:

* The eyeshadow palettes represent nice design but an average product
* The lipsticks have a lovely vinyl finish that is richly pigmented. They make a nice change from MAC (Amplified) and Tom Ford but at the same time they don't compete with them.

This line has recently launched in the UAE and can be found in Sephora/Dubai Mall. I braved the crowds and the army of lingerers that staff the store (don't you hate Sales Assistants that assume the role of your shadow?) and picked up a few things.

I did look at the nail polishes (not that unique and pretty expensive), the foundation (very sheer) and the blushes (nothing standout on first glance) but plumped for the basics - a neutral eyeshadow palette in Lolita and two lipsticks in Seduce me and Voila.

First the eyeshadow palette...

There are smaller eyeshadow sets for sale but I thought I would go with the set that seemed the most popular/played it safe - Lolita. This is a palette containing 7 neutral shades.

Texture wise you get a representation from matte, shimmer and nightmare chunky glitter.

The packaging is nice. You get the little nylon pouch containing the palette, and the palette itself is a shiny reflective plastic. It doesn't feel super high end but it doesn't feel cheap either. The palette has a handy mirror and then the 7 eyeshadows are small round pans.

The 3 shades on the left are matte and lovely. They create a nice neutral eye and are relatively smooth to apply - something which is not always the case with matte shadows.

Now the middle shade. The middle shade really has no place in my life. It's poorly pressed glitter that serves no purpose other than to cheapen the overall feel of the palette

The matte pink sitting next to it is okay...but I end up looking like I have an eye infection when I apply it so tend to stear clear. The two shadows sitting on the right are lovely warm shimmery shades and soft to apply.

So overall, it's pretty and it's usable. But that in itself doesn't justify the purchase to me.

I sometimes feel that the Lolita shadows didn't last that long on the eye and that fading was inevitable and fast. That's a big deal to me and every time I bring this out I think of the Naked (1) palette and most recently Bobbi Brown's Old Hollywood palette.

To me, these are worth the money. They may not have the cachet of a high fashion brand but they are fantastic offerings with a range of quality shadows.

The lipsticks...

You should be proud of me! I didn't go for the nudes! The reason for that is two-fold:

1) I really didn't want to buy anymore nude lipsticks - at least that day :) ; and
2) The nude testers looked very matte in comparison to the rich, shiny deeper shades which is confusing when we consider the fact that this is called "Lip gel" and meant to give you shiny finish after application. Are they not all borne equal in the range? Were some sourced at different suppliers?

Anyway, I got Seduce Me (on the left and a deep berry Red) and Voila (Pink/magenta red).

They are light on the lips, saturated in colour and non-drying. Overall I would say they are very nice.

Are they as luxurious as Tom Ford? No. Are they are good value/good quality as MAC Amplified's? No. As I said, they are nice and I really love Seduce Me. It's a nice magenta punch that's perfect for the season.

(Nothing like a crude lip swatch to remind you that you need to buy a matching lip liner eh?!)

The fade on the lips is average due to the high shine factor but it's not a problem reapplying. They really glide on very smoothly.

Overall...

I am sorry I cannot give you" OMG YOU GUYS YOU HAVE TO BUY THESE, THEY ARE AMAZING" type review. This is especially the case as I purchased with my own cash-ola but if I was talking to friends I would say, check out the lipsticks and skip the rest for now.

Nothing else is that stand-out to me. But maybe I am wrong. After all my time spent at the counter was cut short in order to reduce my exposure to the Sephora Sales Assistant Dragons. If you have had a different experience tell me and I will bravely venture back on your recommendation :)

PS. Do people like beauty reviews? I have tons of stuff I can give my two cents on but I want to make sure it's something you want!

  3. Love beauty reviews Laura! I hate shopping in Dubai at Bloomingdales, Paris Gallery and Sephora because of the overbearing sales assistants, I can't even say they are over enthusiastic as they are just pushing whatever they have been told to sell that day.

I have Voila, really like the colour and formula but it did bleed on my lips. One thing that is amazing in my book is the Face Brush 2-can use it for literally everything.

I went a bit crazy recently in there with Marc Jacobs but life is taking over and I haven't had time to review and test everything. If anything is 'amazing' I will let you know!!

    1. Try asking any of them for advice on a product and you will be met with a blank face! It's time like these that I really pine for Space NK :)

Yes, do let know if there are any must haves. I saw the picture of your haul and it was seriously impressive. There has got to be some good stuff in there :)

  4. Gasp! Google ate my comment!

So I was saying that I enjoy your beauty reviews because, nude lipsticks aside, I tend to like the same things that you like :) At this price level, those products should offer some 'wow' in my opinion, so I'll gladly pass. I would have needed to buy online (I admit I had an eye on the palette) but now I'm sure I wouldn't love it enough to justify the price - so thanks for the savings ;)

  6. Yes!!! I love your beauty reviews; I was so happy to stumble across your blog yesterday because I have missed my lollipop26 tutorials for years now. I did have a question for you regarding your Jane Iredale Margie review - is the color warm or cool toned? I don't want to rely on the colors on my screen and it would be good to know before I order it. It was stunning on you and I feel compelled to purchase! How would you say it compares to Seduce Me?

  7. Yes, please do beauty reviews! I love your opinion. You are the first one of all the people that I follow on YouTube and blogs to say that the Lolita palette wasn't amazing. Obviously to each their own, but sometimes you have to wonder if the product really does live up to the hype. Its refreshing to hear an honest review.

  11. I like the fact the palette is slimline...I worked in beauty sales myself...and I don't think people realise that lots of the time you are give really high targets to achieve every day....hence why they are pushy...I use to get a lot of stick from my area manager if I didn't hit target. Its worse in high end luxury brands I can tell you!!

  15. I can not believe it. I guess I expected better results from Marc Jacobs. I had decided to buy something from the website, but I will not do. I will definitely buy this paletta of bobbie Brown.
    Thanks for the review.

  16. I felt the same way about the nail polishes! The packaging was the only unique thing about them. But the colors? Def more happening in the "indie" nail polish world these days! I tested a few colors in the store and they did not dry to an ultra shiny finish, either. But, I'm sure they will sell well anyway.

  17. So do you recommend Naked1 over these BB's? This Xmas I'm planning to get a Naked1 (or Naked3...) for myself, I hope it's good quality! Thanks.

  22. I would love to hear more from you, and thank YOU for being honest about this, after all the hype I went and picked this up and returned it! (only the second thing I have ever returned!) I thought for the price it isn't worth it, I wanted some lipsticks but after the first purchase I stayed away, perhaps now I will give them a chance.

  28. I follow your blog because it's simply a shopping blog. So I come here to check out what's new in fashion. I would love beauty reviews as long as they're honest. I noticed you said you were completely honest because you paid for the product with your own money, but I hope even if it was a gift or a sponsored review that you will be just as honest. I rely heavily on reviews when I'm buying a product I've never tried before. I looove how blunt you were in this review.

  29. I felt the exact same way about the Lolita palette, in fact, mine was a bigger disaster. I have a lipstick in roll the dice and I think it's lovely, but not much different than say - maybelline. I returned the eyeshadow, I returned the blush, I kept the lipstick. The ONLY thing I love and will re purchase is the concealer. Crazy. It sets beautifully, has great coverage, doesn't crease, it's my HG.

  38. Thanks for sharing your opinion about the products. When I first saw swatches of the palettes I wasn't impressed with them but after so many youtubers/bloggers loved them I was really tempted to splurge on these. Your post let me stray from those thoughts again.
I love your reviews on beauty and would like more of them.

  42. yes, more beauty reviews please! :) also, i wasn't super enthused when the marc jacobs line came out so i'm glad i didn't run out and buy something just to buy it...which i normally do ha. xoxo

  43. Oh wow, the Lolita palette was on my Wish List! I may have to rethink that now. I haven't swatched it but the eyeshadows in the Marc Jacobs Gift set (comes with the makeup bag, liner, 3 shadow palette, mascara, and a mirror) those were buttery soft and so incredibly pigmented?

I wonder if they're from different suppliers too? so odd. I hope you do more reviews :)

  44. The lipsticks look like a lovely texture, but the whole collection just seemed to come across as a fashion designer trying to break in to cosmetics, but not really knowing that much about it, so just kinda threw some average stuff in fancy packaging and called it high end, know what I mean?
