An ode to Oribe...

Welcome to the Oribe Dry Texturising Spray diaries.

I first bought it when I had long hair. And I hated it. I thought it was the biggest load of rubbish I had ever wasted my money on - a jumped up dry shampoo. It did absolutely nothing special and I berated the bloggers who had raved about it.

Then I chopped my hair off and was made to eat humble pie. With shorter hair it was as if I was working with a totally different product. It transformed my flat hair and gave consistently great volume. Better than that, it just made me feel good.

Now I am not sure my hair can live without it.

Dammit.

I have attempted to find a dupe. Redken Wool Shake was purchased but it just didn't give the same airy volume.  Then I went on the hunt for Show Beauty Working Texture Spray - Tamara Ecclestone's line - but its all sold out in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. So I googled various other dupes including Bumble & Bumble's Dryspun finish and Charles Worthington's Volume & Bounce Texturising Spray. They both sounded fabulous - but are impossible to ship in here due to their aerosol status.

I have therefore accepted this - I will not waste money buying dupes and I shall just go straight to the original. It's a bit of a hassle because I have to beg someone to bring this into the country for me - it's not yet sold here and can't be officially imported - but it's oh so worth it. The finish it gives....it just cannot be surpassed. We are talking intense volume that lasts for a couple of days. A finish that doesn't feel too heavy (a la Batiste or any of those volumising powder/gels) and a life full of good hair days.

My application routine is as follows:
  • Wash hair with Davines hair products
  • Rough blow dry with a volumising spray - either Phyto's or Serge Normant's
  • Whip out the Babyliss curling tong and create loose waves in hair
  • Brush out said waves with a brush
  • Move on to a liberal spray of Oribe - concentrating on the roots of the areas I want volume. Use fingers to work into roots.

Done. As easy as that.

I know this stuff is ridiculously expensive. Even the teeny tiny iddy biddy cannister is over $20 for goodness sake. However, a day without this is a sad day for my flat hair. I cannot promise to a lifetime subscription but for the foreseeable future I just can't imagine anything better...well unless you can fill me in on one that you love of course? :)

Get hooked on Oribe at Barneys, Bergdorfs or Space NK.

  1. I am having my hair cut to a similar length as yours soon, and I think Oribe might be just what I need to inject a little bit of oomph!

Great post, you have me hooked.

  2. I love it also. I just bought a bottle of Redken 15 quick tease for $18(USD) and LOVE it. Doesn't have the amazing Oribe smell but does the job. Check it out in Dubai if you can. It is an aerosol so no shipping. Love your shorter hair, miss your videos.

  3. I love this but it really doesn't last long on me, couple hours max. I hear Toni & Guy have a similar one so I am going to try that one next! The Apre Beach spray is also fabulous :)

  11. I probably shouldn't say this since you can't get hold of it but...*whispers* I think the bumble & bumble spray is better than the oribe. I bought the mini can of the oribe and whilst there's no denying it's really good and smells lush, I wasn't sure about forking out for the big can, so I asked my mum to buy me the bumble and bumble for Christmas and it's just so.damn.good! I use it daily and it's fab for adding loads of volume to my long (but choppy) hair and it smells lovely. If you get a chance to try it when you're back in the UK I recommend it as I think it's reached HG status for me :)

  12. I brought the small one as a trial on Space NK, now seriously addicted to it and going to buy the large one. I use wash my hair every other day, now I wash it every third because the spray.

I have shoulder length so if works amazingly on it. And even my hair goes flat during the day, I work my fingers in my hair and the volume comes back. It is a serious holy grail product, expensive but worth every penny.

  15. I tried the Bumble and Bumble one and wasn't impressed. The volume didn't even last a day for my thick hair and the scent was too powerful. I adore the bed head volume that Oribe gives me and the smell is so intoxicating... In a good way of course. :)

  28. Haze c/o Evo is a fantastic product, it is a powder, but without the heaviness and with no stickiness.
