Makeup ramble

This is the kind of post that can only be written after spending a weekend playing with makeup.

Over the last couple of days I have been trying to tidy up the stash and in consequence have been slapping an array of creams and shadows on my face.  This process led me to conclude a few things:

1) I love makeup and think that I should always buy more. I really shouldn't write that down because I sound like a crazy hoarder but I am just putting it out there to set expectations about future makeup-related purchases :)

2) Tarte's 12 hour blushes really don't last 12 hours.

3) Maybelline gel liner in Blue is everything - especially when applied with a MAC 210.

4) Jouer Matte Moisture Tint does have a place in the world. It's not the most exciting base product I have ever tried but I do have to admit that it gives an uber natural finish that fakes naturally perfect skin. PS. Would not repurchase.

5) MAC Sable will forever be in my life.

6) I hate my blush palettes and wish I had never depotted.

7) NARS eyeshadow primer is good in a smooth-finish kind of way but I probably won't bother repurchasing.

8) Some Bobbi Brown eyeshadows are really not good quality (i.e., the Metallics).

and lastly...

9) Eyeshadows make the best highlighters.

The last point was a bit of a blast from the past.

Years ago I used to swear by this, honing in on pretty light pearl shades (Bourjois Blanc Diaphane being my favourite)  to create a glow that gave my face shape.

I think this was before I bought 48948964 face highlighters and so the usage of an eyeshadow was more functional multi-tasking than by choice.

It should be said that this timeframe was also an era where I was probably seen wearing orange foundation, so-nude-it-hurts lips and muddy bronzer. Adding a pretty highlight was probably my saving grace and years later I still think that this is a good move.

Of course the trick is finding the right shade and consistency. It just happens that the colours I like the most end up in the eyeshadow category. Somehow I have convinced myself that the effect is softer and prettier.

This weekend I went for MAC Nylon. This is such a neglected shade in my collection. In the pan it's a bit dull. It appears like a light gold but a little flat. Once applied though it translates as a soft light white-gold and works so well as a highlighter - both on the eyes and face.

I think that after wearing this for a couple of days I have been reminded of two things:

1) Nylon is awesome and
2) Highlighting really is a must.

I need to get into the habit of doing this - especially on really tired days....well to be honest on any day. A bit of a lift and glow is always very welcome.

And that concludes my random makeup ramble :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

  1. I love using eyeshadow as a highlighter. I still need to find the perfect one though as the majority of eyeshadows I use as highlighters are far too shimmery for my liking. It's impossible for me to find a matte eyeshadow I can use as I'm far too picky for my own good.

  2. I still love you makeup posts the most :) this is a great read.

I also used to highlight with an eyeshadow!!! Years and years ago I used to apply Gleam eyeshadow by MAC for that J.Lo glow. I always forget to use highlighter now but I agree it makes such a difference.

P.s. Too Faced La Crème lipsticks. You must try. I'll shut up now.

  4. That may be my favourite ever of your posts! I love MAC Nylon and use it whenever I remember which is more than can be said for roughly 95% of my make up collection that currently spans 8 shoe boxes (2 of which are knee high boot boxes-whoops). Tomorrow I am going to try Nylon as my highlighter because Monday is definitely a day when I could do with a lift, so thank you for a lovely idea and vive le maquillage

  5. Totally agree with eyeshadows being great highlighters. I've found some gems by doing this. I also swear by using eyeshadows as eyebrow fillers, using an angled brush of course. You've made me want to go and shop my stash now. Where to start?!

  6. I liked this post. Its amazing how easily I start procrastinating when I start tidying up... everything needs to be tested. Blue eyeliner is the best. I used to always go with black, but that can be a little harsh... blues and browns are my friends now. I love eyes hadows highlighters too. Especially when my brows are a little untidy. :)x

  21. Hi darling. I laughed when I read that you regretted de potting your blushes. I feel the same way. I have 10 blushes in my palettes and it is always a pain to pull them out! Defo one for the make up artists.i shopped my stash today and pulled out probably one of my favourite highlighters of all time. It's the highlighting duo by Stila. I'm a highlighter fiend so have been thru my fair share of them. But I think this is the only one out of all of them that I would happily repurchase. The texture and effect reminds me of one that I bought almost 15 years ago by Prescriptives -Yes 15 YEARS ago lol which obviously has long gone. Anyway I'll stop my rambling now lol. Tc xoxo

  38. Wow Mac Nylon looks great on you as a highlight! I totally agree that highlighting is a must - even if I don't have time for other things I try to always remember to highlight, and when I don't and check myself out in the mirror in the afternoon at the office I totally regret it because I always look so tired and dull.

I feel you on #1 - there's just so many things and always something new to buy! Why don't you like the blushes in a palette? I've been considering depotting but maybe I shouldn't!

  45. I have a post-it stuck to my mirror of jobs needing done, one is to clean my makeup brushes (relatively easy) and the other is to go through my makeup drawer (darn right frightening). I would have to agree with the eye shadow highlight, also a fan of it myself. I find that most highlighters are too glittery and have turned to eye shadow far more frequently!

Fantastic post, as per. Your blog actually inspired me to start my own, still far from reaching your quality of blogging but I'm just doing my own thing and having a fab time!
