Just when I think I have finally matured and grown up, I go and get pastel coloured dots applied to my nails…
Yes, I have embraced nail art. Long gone are the days when the only manicure option considered was a mono cream finish shade. Apparently now anything goes. It all happened when I heard about SOH Dubai.
This little nail salon is located in Galleria Mall on Al Wasl Road and specialises in statement nails. Sure you can get an everyday manicure but should you be in the mood you could also get a cupcake/burger/pizza/Darth Vader etc painstakingly drawn on your nails.
It took 2 hours to apply and there was a scary moment half way through when I was told how much each nail cost (cue quick mental maths to times said cost by 10) but it was completely worth it. I mean how did they get the dots so even???
Next was "Faded" and this is my absolute favourite. I have always wanted to get this done and I know that in theory it's very simple (you need a sponge and some patience) but there is nothing like a professional's touch.
I mean come on, do we really think I could get it to look like this????
So yes nail art and me are one but...and here's the but...we only get together at the weekend.
As much as I want to say I sport these designs all week long I chicken out, reach for the acetone and play it safe for work days. I just can't have that much personality happening on my hands and I become acutely conscious of being judged as some ditzy bimbo that spends far too much time on what she looks like.
Let's ignore that this assessment is in some ways accurate and let's acknowledge the fact that it is wrong to be prejudged for make up/nails/clothes worn but still, this is the reality for me.
Am I alone here or would you rock some cupcake nails for client meetings?
Your nails look gorgeous, love the ombré effect ones - so cute for Spring! I would totally rock these nails for work, they're cute but also quite simple so they're not too in your face :) xx

I know exactly what you mean about judgy-eyes in the office for 'frivolous' colours but I love the dots! They look way too perfect to be done by hand; I thought they were a printed sticker when I saw them on your Instagram! Pastels are a work staple for clothing so why not on your nails too? :)
ReplyDeleteI am too boring to try it and I have a packet of nail art stickers thing sitting my drawer unloved. Hahaha
ReplyDeleteI see some lovely nail art designs on Instagram and Pinterest but never stray any further than a standard mani, even a shimmer/ glitter finish for me is pushing it!
ReplyDeleteLuxxmint
I absolutely adore those damian nails! I'm not normally a nail art fan but I think you're converting me!
ReplyDeleteWhether I would rock them for work would depend on what type of client I was seeing...so maybe..maybe not!

I think I could get away with the faded nails at work but nothing more obvious. I have to be particularly aware of how I present myself to the population I work with because what I do could contribute to their distress. It's ok, I can be myself outside of work instead. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! Love the faded one.

I love all of these looks. I am a student and currently work in retail so the brighter the nails, the better IMO. Obviously when I graduate and pursue a career I would have to look at what nail polishes I wear but for now I would try my best to rock the cupcake nail ;) xx

Super cute! Absolutely love that 'No Boys' sign too haha! x

I work in a very conservative work environment (banking) and it's an absolute no-go. A lot of colours are even off limits. The only bright colour I would wear to work are shades of red (because it's classic) and pink, and otherwise it's nudes and some dark colours in winter. Luckily, I'm not into nail art that much, so I would only wear it to festivals or a theme parties. The dots are very cute though.

ReplyDeleteI definitely prefer a more toned down look for my nails, but the ombre ones look so awesome!

These are so cute! I typically don't mind rocking crazy nails at work -- as long as there are no meetings scheduled. If there are then I make sure to only wear more neutral nails to keep things professional.

ReplyDeleteGorgeous nails! Wish I had the time to get my nails done!

The fading finish is gorgeous! I would happily sit for hours if that turned out to be the finished look. I don't think I would wear such colourful nails for meetings though. Meetings with my own colleagues yes as they know how odd I can be but they'd be a definite no no with actual clients and suppliers.

I'd definitely wear the dots to work (but not if I had a meeting) - but I work in a fairly informal environment. I love the 'faded' nails but would probably give them a miss for work. How long do they last?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE nail art. I wish I had the skills to do it on my own. I'd definitely sport the fun nails all the time, as I think it's fun and fashionable way to let your personality shine through.

I think that depends on the work you do, but I would never wear nailart. To be honest, I don't even wear nailpolish.

I would totally wear the dotted and the ombré designs for work... probably not some of the other designs, though!
ReplyDeleteI really wanna start doing things with my nails! That first image is soo me! xx

I'd maybe wear the ombre nails for work but that's about as far as I'd go. Frankly, for work I don't get more adventurous than nude pink, berry or greige.
ReplyDeleteLove ombre nails! :))

I totally agree with your thinking about wearing fun nails to work. As sad as it is, women do get judged for things as silly as their nail color. I work in IT, a predominantly male profession, and I had gone in to work with purple nails once. Nothing fancy on them, just a fun pastel purple. As I was helping out a client, he made a comment on my nails that was really not appreciated. While I still do rock nail art sometimes, if I know I'll be seeing a particularly "male" client, I tend to keep it more conservative.
ReplyDeleteLove the ombre pastel nails.

In love with the pastel ombre - I've never heard of SOH but am now desperate to pay them a visit!

I am so sad that in most jobs dressing creatively isn't possible. I wonder why people think that someone can't do a good job because of their nails or their clothes.
