It's all about Limo-Scene

I need to be upfront about this. I cannot slyly pretend that using Limo-Scene as a pretty finishing coat is my wondrous idea. This has been 100% appropriated from Essie during an event I went to last month.

It's now a few weeks later and I remain obsessed - so obsessed in fact that I actually bought my own bottle to have at home. If we keep in mind that I rarely/never paint my own nails (I've lived in Dubai way too long) then I think this speaks volumes about how meaningful this purchase is.

So the concept of it is this.

Slap on a couple of coats of any light polish - think Go Ginza, Fiji or in this case, Bikini So Teeny -  and then, once dry, apply a light coat of Limo-Scene. Observe a transformation before your eyes, with the prettiness of your base colour amplified and injected with an added dose of pastel.

The picture below demonstrates this well - spot the difference between my pinkie and the rest of my fingers.

This was apparently a trend used widely at New York Fashion Week S/S 16 and the degree to which this appeals is going to depend on your aesthetic and your attitude to pastel. It's not going to be a surprise that I am totally on board with the prospect of making flattering, pretty colours even more wearable and, to some degree, unique.

By itself Limo-Scene is a fairly innocuous neutral/sheer pink shade. It's a popular base for a regular French manicure and as such a mainstream type of colour would be easy to dupe. Some rivals that come to mind:

  • Essie Angel Food
  • Essie Mademoiselle
  • Essie Allure
  • Bourjois Rose Lounge

I'm fairly confident that any brand out there would have something similar so if you don't have Essie to hand then don't fret.

Having said that I'm really excited to stick to Limo-Scene and use this combination concept on colours that have so far left me unconvinced. Take Mint Candy Apple for example. This is one of those polishes that I feel I should LOVE but when applied turns a bogey light green. The addition of a light pink finishing coat may however brighten it to a degree that it actually flatters my skin tone. We shall see!

Now that I have been firmly introduced and keen on the idea of polish combining I would love to know what shades you recommend applying together. As a concept I think it's interesting to use polish in ways that compliment each other and provides the wearer with a more unique nail look. If you have any secrets you would like to share I think we would all appreciate it :)

  1. First of all: I love the new layout and new header. Elegant and chic. And then, on the actual topic: The difference is stunning. I don't really have many pastels shades, just because I feel they rarely suit me, but maybe that is the solution.

    1. Ah thank you so much!

I think its all about tone. For example, I know people love Sand Tropez but that looks terrible on me! Topless and Barefoot on the other hand is amazing. You definitely need to try :)

  2. This post has come to my life at the best time (what has my life become that makes changing a nail polish colour this exciting..). I bought Limo-scene about a momth back with the intention of using it as an all over colour. Unfortunately, i've found it to be too thin to build up to an opaque colour. I also recently bough Mint Candy Apple which is the most vile shade of green once on my hands so maybe the layering technique is the way forward!

May report back on this one over on my blog!

    Thanks Laura.

    1. I really get confused with Mint Candy Apple. I see it on someone like Sincerely Jules and it looks incredible but then I put it on and look horrendous. Cant wait to rectify the situation!

Thank you for reading Ellie x

    2. Laura do you have the US version of Mint Candy Apple or the European? Because the European is that ungly green colour while the US is that gorgeous more "bluey" shade.

  3. I loved this post! I think Essie Ballet Slippers could also work really well - I find it too much of a pain to apply alone so it could be great for muting other shades. I'll definitely try this Ballet Slippers over Essie's Tart Deco - Tart Deco alone is a bit too bright for me but I'd love it if it was more pastel and muted. Thanks for the tip!

    1. I know what you mean about Tart Deco. It's quite a sharp peach/orange so this would definitely help make it a little less stark!

  4. Wow, what a fab idea! I will be trying this with my beloved Essie Mademoiselle xx

    1. Thanks Livia! Also a great one to use! Love Mademoiselle!

  5. I'll definitely have to try this, I have a few Essie colours that would work really well :) I'm loving your new blog header too!

  6. Love the concept of this! And Essie always seem to last longer and look more glossy. I'm going to have to give this a try. x

    1. Definitely try it! Any light pink sheer shade would probably do the trick!

  7. Wow, what a difference! Have you found it to help formulation issues as well?

    1. I don't think it makes a huge difference in terms of quality/longevity BUT the difference in colour is amazing!

  8. I am obsessed with the serenity shades currently out!!! You've just made it even more delectable

    1. Cannot wait to get hold of them!

  9. This is so fun and such a FAB idea!

  10. Your picture is so pretty, I have the strong need to have light blue nails now :D

  11. The color is beautiful and perfect for spring! Thanks for the share!

  12. I love it!! Gonna have to try this trend :)

  13. At the risk of sounding like a knob, I must ask: your pinkie is with Limo-Scene, or the rest of your fingers are?

  14. This looks great! I actually have Mint Candy Apple and LOVE it, but only during very specific times of the year when my skin is the right color - once my hands get a little tan in the summer, it looks way too light. This may be a way to keep using it! Thanks for sharing!

  15. What a gorgeous colour! I own a similar one from Topshop. Perfect for Spring!

  16. Wow I can't believe the difference Limo-Scene makes! Completely transforms the nail colour. I love Essie think I need to pick this one up now! xxx

  19. Hi Laura! May I ask where your pretty bangles are from? Thanks!

  20. Laura, I love how the colour combo looks on your nails. I am going to try that as well. Have never thought of this. I use a complete white nail polish base when I am applying neons on my fingers or toes, but now I am thinking, I might even try with other shades and definitely going to apply a pale shade, like Fiji or the likes (which I have in abundance in my nail box) and then use a blue ish or lilacy colour on top. Thank you for the advice! :)

  21. I never thought to combine colors like that! Fabulous idea. Love the color too!
